AlexdeParis said: east127thstreet said: LOL. If I said "Crack kills" George Clinton would disagree with me. The point is, the Beatles didn't have a fraction of the funk that the Rolling Stones, the Who, Led Zeppelin, or Black Sabbath individually did, but yet and still it is THEY who always get to epitomize '60s rock with the pomp and adulation about "how much they changed everything". Well, if by "changed everything" you mean to say they made American music - in its tradtional forms *extremely* funky - amazingly unfunky, that I could agree with. IMO Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin have had FAR more influence in the big picture, but then their core audience tends to be working class, blue collar and poor folks, not the intelligentsia and pseudo-intelligentsia media spokespeople, so of course we dare not legitmize these "lower classes" by praising their music too much. A little, of course, is fine, as long as its always understood/subtly stated that they "aren't the Beatles". What bullshit. The Beatles are the oddballs of the 60s British Rock tradition in that, amongst other things, they aren't funky. Being that all these acts were doing their own takes on American black music, the Beatles, IMO did it the least well. When I listen to Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath I am reminded of why and how Britain held their own against Hitler in WW2 - the lone capitalist country in Europe to do so. When I listen to the Beatles, on the other hand, I am easily reminded of why Britain's colonies so easily punked them for the business half of an entire continent in the 1780s. WTF? First of all, Sabbath and Zeppelin are primarily '70s bands. Second of all, wow. Anyway, another of the Beatles' funkier songs I forgot to mention is "Baby You're a Rich Man." The Beatles were much funkier than say, the Moody Blues or The Dave Clark five or, I'd say, than the Kinks. Black Sabbath I've never found to be very funky at all, although Led Zeppelin definitely could be. I just think it's downright crazy to deny the funk in say, Drive My Car (hell a lot of Rubber Soul is VERY funky) Lady Madonna, Taxman, I want you (she's so heavy), Come Together, The boogie piano part of You Never Give Me Your Money etc. etc. No, they weren't James, Sly or P-funk and none of those songs are comparable to Sex machine, Thank You Falletin Me Be Mice Elf Agin or Superstition, but they were certainly as funky as most of the early rock icons except maybe Little Richard or Bo Diddley, and I'd say as funky as any of the rest of the British Invasion except for the Stones, The Animals and The Small Faces.

Janis Joplin (Pain is her voice ) And I hope Bessie Smith took it back undamaged when Janis got to the other side.
Eric Clapton - I don't hate him, but the blues is supposed to move me, and he don't move me. He was good with Cream at times, if imo he was the least interesting musician in the band. Elton John - Did some good songs in the '70s, but I don't understand why he gets such respect over some of his contemporaries. He is a great self-publicist, I suppose. John Coltrane - I have the greatest respect for the man and his music, but give me Miles, Monk, Mingus or Ellington any time. Trane was a great artist, but a little too earnest for me. Weather Report - Did the odd good'un, but I don't feel enough soul comin' my way from this band. Mahavishnu and Santana are more my thang in the jazz-rock legends stakes. Leonard Cohen REM Not sure if the latter two are legendary or not (being dead/ dying young seems to be the best career move in the 'legend' stakes ). [Edited 7/12/07 12:58pm]

[Edited 7/12/07 12:58pm] You got it so right about Janis Joplin; lol. You got it so wrong about Leonard Cohen. Check out Hey That's No Way To Say Goodbye, Ain't No Cure For Love, and at least forty other classics going up to 1992. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

Well, he wrote "Paisley Park"... I think the WHOLE "Around The World In A Day" album pays a nondirect tribute to the beatles, although Prince wouldn't acknowledge it.

Elvis was always somewhat overrated to me. Not saying that the man wasnt talented but he was very overrated to me, but I still like some of his songs, same with the Rolling Stones, a bit overrated, but I still like their songs...Does anybody else think Micheal Jackson was overrated also. My brothers say all the time that Prince was overrated, and the only reason why he got any press was because he was 'weird' [Edited 7/14/07 11:47am]

But that's just me My picks - The Beatles (except for Come Together & While my guitar gently wheeps, love those) The Beach Boys (their sound wrecks my nerves) The Bee Gees (""") Louis Armstrong (he annoys the sh!t out of me, both vocals and trumpet) And I have extremely contradictory feelings towards Queen. Love stuff like Under Pressure or Another one bites the dust, but hatehatehate Bohemian Rhapsody and all the other musical-ish stuff. Really can't stand it. But just for the record - I truly respect all the artists listed above and would never say they shouldn't have become famous. They're simply not my taste, that's all. Go figure. IN response to the overrated thing, Prince has historically been underrated and if anything, his "weirdness" (name change, lack of videos, cryptic interviews)while entertaining, has kept him from achieving the proper recognition for his musicianship. MJ was never overrated until the whole King of Pop thing. HIs career has been unbelievable in scope and achievement that he didn't need the KOP moniker prove his greatness. I remember Kurt Loder (of MTV) stated that in 1991 MJ and his people wanted the man to be referred to as the KOP during any mentioning on MTV or VH1. The title, while justified (sales, popularity) seemed forced. "Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."
