Tupac may not have been the best rapper but his impact cannot be denied he was certainly able to move and make people think. He was strong and opinionated, exactly what popular black music needs today.
Had Pac lived Akon, 50 cent, T-pain and the rest would be either in jail or on minimum wage right now cause Pac would have dissed those fake thugs to retirement. lol

Raved? I said I considered it to be the best of the last three albums. That's hardly raving.

And yeah, I did have several of Madonna's albums up until about 12 years ago.
I only ever listened to two of them, tho'.

Perhaps I've misunderstood the question, but I thought it said legendary artists?

I don't consider the likes of 50 Cent, Kylie, Mariah, Chris Brown and a few mentioned here to be legendary artists at all. Maybe in their own minds, but not in mine.

I think it was the talk around him. My great music loss for me was when Big L was murdered....insert the crickets sound....

I'm also one of those that go "big deal" about Tupac but guy was a poetic soul tortured with an ignorant thought process. confused Love his lyrics though and he showed a lot of passion that made him a great actor but I wouldn't go far to call him the greatest rapper of all time.

Thank you!!

Tiny Tim. (Is he considered to be a legend?) There are NO words to describe how bad of a song "Tiptoe Through The Tulips" is.

Well, that was sort of the point...plus, it wasn't really his song, Cliff 'Ukulele Ike' Edwards sang it at least 35 years earlier.
Well whoever Cliff 'Ukulele Ike' Edwards is, I hope he sang that song better then Tiny Tim did. I can't believe that song was even remotely a hit. People should've been throwing rotten eggs and tomatoes at Tim when he sang.

as has been mentioned; these legends are so non-existent for me

Bob Dylan (i believe ppl when they say he's a legend, great songwriter etc., i'll just never know personally. i don't have and don't plan to get any of his stuff)

You might already have some and just don't know it. Off the top of my head, I can think of Jimi's cover of "All Along the Watchtower," Stevie's cover of "Blowin' in the Wind," and the O'Jays' cover of "Emotionally Yours."

Beatles (same as above; heard certain snippets of songs by virtue of just being alive, but not moved to cop anything)

I can't imagine. Such a versatile group -- there's a Beatles song out there you'd love. My favorite is "Don't Let Me Down." Marvin, Stevie, and EW&F did some great Fab Five covers ("Yesterday," "We Can Work It Out," and "Got to Get You Into My Life").

Yes, they did them BETTER than the Beatles did! The Beatles simply did not possess the funk. It's really that simple. End of story.

Gonna have to disagree with you there. "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" is funky and so is "Come Together." Unlike "We Can Work It Out," "Got to Get You Into My Life" already possessed some funk before EW&F covered it. "Get Back" is kind of funky, but I'll concede that's probably due to Billy Preston on the keys.

The Beatles have written some funky songs. No, none of them are "Funky Drummer." You're saying that "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" isn't the least bit funky? I think George Clinton and the late, great Eddie Hazel would disagree with you.

LOL. If I said "Crack kills" George Clinton would disagree with me. The point is, the Beatles didn't have a fraction of the funk that the Rolling Stones, the Who, Led Zeppelin, or Black Sabbath individually did, but yet and still it is THEY who always get to epitomize '60s rock with the pomp and adulation about "how much they changed everything". Well, if by "changed everything" you mean to say they made American music - in its tradtional forms *extremely* funky - amazingly unfunky, that I could agree with. IMO Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin have had FAR more influence in the big picture, but then their core audience tends to be working class, blue collar and poor folks, not the intelligentsia and pseudo-intelligentsia media spokespeople, so of course we dare not legitmize these "lower classes" by praising their music too much. A little, of course, is fine, as long as its always understood/subtly stated that they "aren't the Beatles". What bullshit. The Beatles are the oddballs of the 60s British Rock tradition in that, amongst other things, they aren't funky. Being that all these acts were doing their own takes on American black music, the Beatles, IMO did it the least well. When I listen to Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath I am reminded of why and how Britain held their own against Hitler in WW2 - the lone capitalist country in Europe to do so. When I listen to the Beatles, on the other hand, I am easily reminded of why Britain's colonies so easily punked them for the business half of an entire continent in the 1780s.

confused WTF? First of all, Sabbath and Zeppelin are primarily '70s bands. Second of all, wow.

Anyway, another of the Beatles' funkier songs I forgot to mention is "Baby You're a Rich Man."

Maybe funk ain't the right word to use for any Beatles song, maybe jump blues or soul but funk? Nah. I just think they were a cool rock band. shrug They had some good songs though so I can't hate, they had Billy Preston in their crew, that's what probably gave them "funk" since Billy Preston was one of the princes of funk. fro

Well, I think there is an obvious difference between being a funk group/band and making a funky song (or a song with funky elements). For instance, Queen is certainly not a funk band, but "Another One Bites the Dust" is clearly a funky song. The Beatles never did anything that straight up funky, but I think there are elements of some songs (like Paul's bass playing in parts of "I Want You") that are funky. Regardless, I have my opinion and some random rant from out of the blue isn't going to change it. shrug The ending to "Don't Let Me Down" (again, with a major assist from the late Mr. Preston) is something I'd call funky.

Queen had funk elements in their costumes during the EARLY-'70s though. lol But yeah "Another One Bites the Dust" brought out their funk. nod It's alright tho, sometimes we hear funk in different ways. cool

Question. What if you like the song but don't like the artists vocal performance? Case in point. I like some of the songs that Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison sang. But I just don't like any of their voices.

On the original topic, Tom Waits is a total mystery to me. Whenever I see/hear his stuff the only word that comes to mind is 'why'?
