guitar solo's are somehow cliche now!

A good guitar (or any instrument for that matter) solo is never boring regardless of what the nouveau-hipsters say my friend.
I'd rather hear a well constructed instrumental solo than someone wailing and whining about their psychological problems.

That's what...

...psychologists are for. wink

A few examples of what I might call shredding alternatives.
Lines over compositions that don't just sound like loud overdriven Carcassi exercises.
You might even hear a chord or two.

Allan Holdsworth - Letters Of Marque
As good as he is, he's incredibly humble.

Wayne Krantz - Infinity Split

Shawn Lane - Gray Pianos Flying

Greg Howe - Wonderland In The Sky
Love the way Greg plays this melody.

Many 13 tear olds on youtube can shred but they will never be famous for making a classic album.

It's not how fast you play but the sound you create.

Has malmsteen, vai,van halen, etc created an album as good as Electric ladyland? HELL NO!

Frank zappa is my fav guitar player. Even steve vai says how great and unique he was.

I have read that he used '10 Guage' Strings. I also heard that his 'G' string was a lighter guage than usual. I'm not sure what exactly...maybe somebody has more info.....??

How heavy are "10 Guage Strings"?

'10 Guage' strings are pretty much Standard size strings. Not 2 heavy at all. I use them on my guitar..mostly because its all my hands can handle. boxed

I read that Prince uses '11 Guage' Strings on his Hohner...maybe 4 that Chunky sound when he does those FunkY Chords & he uses 10's on his Clouds. I don't consider myself a shredder by any means...but I find that Lighter Guage strings make it easier 4 that type of playing. But I grew up wanting that Eric Clapton, BB King, Hendrix, Prince sound. SO shredding never really did much 4 me.

That's weird, because isn't the cloud a shorter scale than the Hohner? You'd think it would be the other way around.

No. But it usually correlates with the given musician's dressing sense.

I haven't even looked at the clip.

However, i'm guessing it's one of the trillion that have been uploaded of a guy in his bedroom that steps on his Metal-Mania Overdrive stomp-box (invariably unleashing a cloud of obscene white noise like hiss) prior to launching into his version of Eruption, Hot For Teacher or (fill in the shred-fare of your choice) for your listening pleasure.

Yeah, I think I might to shred a little, here and there. But, not too much. Hell, I find that a lot of solos that include more space and time to adjust what is actually being played can be the best solos. I don't know if the "Voodoo Chile" solo would be considered shredding, but if it is, then, I would most likely benig trying to go in that route of playing. But, I have one more question, how heave could the "11 Guage Strings" be because I heard the heavier they are, the clearer the sound may get? Once again, I don't mean to bother you by any neans. I am just curious, so don't feel obligated to answer if you don't want to. wink

Shredding is becoming the norm in solos, and people tend to associate this with being a good guitarist...
Personally it irritates the fuck out of me , because in my opinion shredding scales isn't melodic... There are some melodic shredders like Vai, Halen, etc... But im more partial to old school melodic soling Ala David GilmoreTo me soloing is something intelectual, not how many notes you can play within a certain tempo
Am i wrong?
Sometimes minimalism is a virtue...

Shreding was in the beginning only meant for exercices to train your abilities, dexterity and quickness with your guitar.

Van Halen definitely popularized the shredding and established it as an art form.

Shredding is beautiful if this is melodic and well performed.

Didn't Ritche Blackmore remark that shredding is just doing finger exercises with a little vibrato at the end, lol

I love Yngwie and I love shred. His image and playing are all over the top, but i dig it.

When I think "shred", one record label comes to mind: Mike Varney's Shrapnel Records. That was the home of shred.

As far as shred being "dead", a lot of those '80s cats are like freakin' gods over there in Japan. Nuno Bettencourt, Richie Kotzen, Paul Gilbert and Marty Freidman (who has his own tv show over there) are like royalty over there.

I've played piano since I was a kid, and one of the execices I used to do before any lesson was playing every single key with all my fingers from the left to the right and from the right to the left, with both the right hand and then the left hand faster everytime.

It helped me to familiarize with the instrument and train your quickness.

For a beginner that looks impressive at first, but in fact this is the most simple thing when you masterize the technique, because this is repetitive.

I know that Prince did that during the Lovesxy tour to impress the public, but indeed this shit is fucking simple. lol

I think this kind of excercice exists for any instrument.

Lately, I've become a fan of this guy's playing:

http://www.youtube.com/wa...YQeywFGRYo

He calls himself Riffguy and he was around at the end of the "hairband" glory days. He would've fit right in with the Yngwie's of the world.
