I first heard "Rebel Rebel" on Live Aid. I thought that rocked! Then I heard the studio version and was disappointed a little, but now I love it.

I've always thought that was a good song but over-rated. It never seems to go anywhere.

this will sound awful, but my favorite versions of 'rebel rebel' are from around the time it was first released, like on the 'diamond dogs' tour and the 'david live' album, mainly because he was unhealthy enough at the time to do the song justice. it's not a clean, healthy song. it's dirty, skanky and diseased. it doesn't sound right peppy and sassy. i mean, it's still good in that bowie's doing it and he's great, but it loses something without that skanktrocious edge.

Well that's my choice.

Since i'm not a giant fan and don't listen to him all that much, the song doesn't have that worn out factor it may have for you.

I'm very impressed with the song itself, the sound of his voice & the vocal performance in general whenever I hear it.
Just a great atmospheric vibe to the piece.

No, that makes perfect sense. I've always thought of it as his Rolling Stones song, and, as such, it should be very unhealthy.

Well being that the song "Fame" is perhaps my all time fave song by anyone, then... But really, that's a tough one. Bowie is DEFINATELY one of my all time fave artists and I adore many of his songs/albums. Can't pick one.

Fame is really one of the coolest songs ever.It was so odd, I can remember hearing it on the radio way back then, and I was only 3 when it came out! Along with Afternoon Delight, it's one of my first memories of music on the radio.

I used to be all about the "Heroes" and "Wild is the Wind" when I was younger, but - after hearing it on the radio the other day - I'm gonna have to go "Rebel Rebel" (the riff's a muthafucka and I like the whole gender-fuck/party lyric; it's a good time).

I'd like to pick one of his Springsteen covers, but I'm not a big fan of early Bruce. Other Thin White Ditties that were on my favorites list back in the day: "TVC15", "Fashion", "What in the World", "Station to Station", "Modern Love".

That said, I'm not much of a Bowie fan anymore. boxed

I don't get how someone can like Prince but not Bowie; their music is quite alike.

I wouldn't say I don't like Bowie, but I find him lyrically frigid; most of his songs that I'm familiar with are more like...intellectual exercises, or something. And I'd disagree that his and Prince's music are "quite alike".

I'm guessing since you were ready to declare Tori Amos the greatest female musician ever after hearing one compilation, you've probably heard about 4 Bowie songs, right? thumbs up!

Station to Station...

It encapsulates everything that I love about that era of Bowie... Cold, depraved, slightly deranged... but with a killer sense of melody and direction.

It's the perfect introduction to the Low/"Heroes" albums that came later; you can tell exactly where the next albums were coming from...

Plus, it introduced The Thin White Duke to the world...

Impossible for me to answer. Any given day, it's either "Life On Mars?," "Heroes," or "Young Americans"

Usually, "Life On Mars?" but maybe that's just today.

Be My Wife

Ya know, that just might be mine as well.

I always feel funny saying it's my favorite, cuz it's so short and seems kinda insignificant within his catelogue.

But something about the mixture of elements in that song really hits me.

The disco foundation mixed with the raw guitars...those lonely, tortured lyrics mixed with that mockney accent...the background story that his relationship with Angie was at an all-time low while he seems to be begging for redemption by serenading her...all of it together makes for a total mindfuck. I can't tell whether he's truly in agony or singing the biggest pisstake ever. It's that combination of sincerity and artifice that I think totally sums up what Bowie is about. And he does it more slyly and strangely on this song than anywhere else. The video seals the deal for me. When he throws back his head during the chorus, he looks hollow and wasted while at the same time chipper and charming. During the guitar solo, he looks pained and uncomfortable. It only adds to the confusion of the song for me. It's one of his simplest songs, yet I cannot figure it out for the life of me. One of the most emotionally vexing songs I've ever heard.
