So in 2 weeks McCartney has done what he couldnt do with EMI a billion dollar corporation and a big promo machine. Further proof that you really do Need a label, just someone who gives a shit about putting out artists still. He's already sold close to 300,000 of this new cd in the US alone, which is almost more than his last release, the GRAMMY nominated "Chaos and Creation" did in all its weeks.

Toby Keith grabs his third No. 1 on The Billboard 200 as "Big Dog Daddy" enters with 204,000 units. On the Top Country Albums chart, it also bows in the penthouse, giving Keith his fifth country No. 1 ... Other big debuts on The Billboard 200 this week come from Fabolous, DJ Khaled, Traveling Wilburys, Queens of the Stone Age, the "Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur" charity compilation, Eddie Levert and Gerald Levert, Enrique Iglesias, Paramore and DMX ... We've also got updates on Journey, the Tony Awards and "Spring Awakening," Brad Paisley, Sean Kingston and Social Distortion.

FLASH POINTS

• In the same week country superstar Toby Keith grabs his 41st top 40 hit on the Hot Country Songs chart, he enters atop The Billboard 200 and Top Country Albums tallies with "Big Dog Daddy." It's his third No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and fifth on the country list ... The new Show Dog Nashville set sold 204,000 last week, off from the 330,000 debut of his last set, "White Trash With Money," which started at No. 2 on both charts. Before that, 2005's "Honkytonk University" opened with 283,000 ... "Big Dog Daddy" marks his fourth consecutive top three album on The Billboard 200, stretching back to the debut of "Shock'N Y'all" in 2003 ... Keith's newest single, "Love Me If You Can," rises 42-33 on Hot Country Songs this week. It's his 41st top 40 hit. The song is the follow-up to "High Maintenance Woman," which peaked at No. 3 June 2 ... Last week Keith stopped by "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" (June 12) and "Jimmy Kimmel Live" (June 13). This week he has already visited "The Colbert Report" and "The View," and was scheduled to play "The Early Show" this morning (June 20).

• Rapper Fabolous parks his "From Nothin' to Somethin' " at No. 2 on The Billboard 200 with 159,000 units. It's his first album since 2004's "Real Talk" bowed at No. 6 with 179,000. That album spent a scant 16 weeks on the chart. His new effort is supported by the single "Make Me Better," which was produced by Timbaland and co-written by Ne-Yo. The latter also sings the hook of the track, which rose into the top 20 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs last week -- Fabolous' first top 20 hit since 2004's "Baby" ... DJ Khaled strikes the top 10 on The Billboard 200 for the first time as "We the Best" bows at No. 8 with 79,000 units. It's the follow-up to his 2006 release "Listennn: The Album," which started at No. 12 with 44,000. The current video from "We the Best," "We Takin' Over," is getting love from BET and MTV Hits. On BET it was the second-most-played clip for the week ending June 17 with 18 detections, according to Nielsen BDS. On MTV Hits, it was No. 5 with 34 plays. On the radio side, "Takin' Over" was ranked top 10 at seven stations for the week, including WRDW Philadelphia (105 detections) and WQHT New York (63 detections).

• Last week's No. 3 album, Paul McCartney's "Memory Almost Full," holds at No. 3 with 107,000 units (down a relatively modest 34%). Maroon5's "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" edges up 5-4 (87,000) while T-Pain's "Epiphany" slides from No. 1 to No. 5 in its second week (82,000; down 52%). Linkin Park's "Minutes to Midnight" is nudged 7-6 (82,000) while Rihanna's "Good Girl Gone Bad" slips 2-7 (81,000) ... The Traveling Wilburys' self-titled anthology arrives at No. 9 with 78,000 units. The set includes the supergroup's two original studio albums -- finally back in print after more than a decade -- along with bonus tracks and a DVD ... Rounding out the top 10 is the still-surging Amy Winehouse, who scores Greatest Gainer honors with the largest unit increase on the chart. Her "Back to Black" album sold 74,000 last week -- up by 7,000 units ... Queens of the Stone Age's "Era Vulgaris" debuts at No. 14 with 52,000. The band's last studio album, "Lullabies to Paralyze," debuted and peaked at No. 5 in 2005. It opened with 97,000 -- though it only spent 12 weeks on the chart. The band's 2002 album, "Songs for the Deaf," bowed at No. 17 with 50,000. However, it spent 50 weeks on The Billboard 200.

• The "Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur" charity compilation debuts at No. 15 with 49,000. The standard edition of the set boasts 23 tracks -- all covers of John Lennon songs. Contributing acts include U2, Christina Aguilera and Green Day. Additionally, an expanded iTunes-exclusive version of the release, which includes 11 more songs, sold 10,000. Because of the extensive extra content on the iTunes version, its sales are not merged with the standard edition. Combined, the sales would have equaled 59,000 ... Also, since the iTunes edition is exclusive to one retailer, it is only allowed to chart on Top Comprehensive Albums (No. 86) ... Finally, on Top Digital Albums, the regular version is at No. 14 (4,000) while the iTunes-exclusive version is at No. 4.

• Enrique Iglesias' "Insomniac" starts with 45,000 at No. 17. His last album, 2003's "Seven," began at No. 31, but with 77,000. Iglesias' highest-charting album remains "Escape," which debuted and peaked at No. 2 in 2001 ... Gerald Levert and Eddie Levert's "Something to Talk About" starts at No. 19 on The Billboard 200 with 42,000. The duets collection is Gerald's second posthumous release. It follows his "In My Songs," which debuted at a career-high No. 2 on The Billboard 200 in March ... Rock outfit Paramore earns its first ink on The Billboard 200 as "Riot!" debuts at No. 20 with 42,000. The band's last set, "All We Know Is Falling," has spent seven weeks on Top Heatseekers, peaking at No. 30 ... DMX's greatest-hits set, "Definition of X: Pick of the Litter," barks at No. 26 with 35,000.

• The use of Journey's single "Don't Stop Believin' " in the June 11 finale of "The Sopranos" -- followed by oodles of media attention for the band and the show -- yields big returns on the charts this week. The 1981 track re-enters Hot Digital Songs at No. 21 with 41,000 paid downloads. It's up 371% in sales compared with the previous week. Concurrently, Journey's "Greatest Hits" album sold nearly 11,000 units this week -- a 111% gain -- pushing the set 17-2 with Greatest Gainer honors on the Top Pop Catalog albums chart. It's the biggest sales week for the album since Christmas 2005, when it shifted 19,000 ... Switching gears, the 61st Tony Awards, broadcast live June 10 on CBS, awakens many cast albums this week. "Spring Awakening," the winner of best musical -- plus another seven awards -- is the biggest beneficiary. The play's cast album blooms with a whopping 183% increase in sales, pushing it to No. 1 on the Top Cast Albums chart and to a belated debut at No. 96 on The Billboard 200. "Spring" pushes aside "Wicked," which has spent the past 18 straight weeks at No. 1 (69 weeks atop the chart overall) ... Other cast albums that get big bumps this week include "Jersey Boys" (up 23%), the 2007 Broadway revival recording of "110 in the Shade" (up 34%), "Grey Gardens" (up 92%), "Mary Poppins" (up 92%), the 2006 Broadway cast recording of "Company" (up 143%), "Monty Python's Spamalot" (up 40%) and the new Broadway cast recording of "A Chorus Line" (up 31%) ... All told, on the 15-position Cast Albums chart, all but two titles have sales increases this week.

MARKET WATCH

• Album units, current chart week: 9.58 million units
• UP 9.5% from last issue's charts: 8.75 million units
• DOWN 7.9% from same week, 2006: 10.4 million units
• This week: The top three albums sell more than 100,000 copies.
• This week last year on The Billboard 200: Busta Rhymes' "The Big Bang" bowed at No. 1 with 209,000. Rock act Three Days Grace started at No. 5 with 78,000. The top three albums each sold more than 100,000 units.

BORDERLINES

• The No. 200 album this week, the various-artists compilation "Hits of the 70s" (Madacy Special Products), sold 5,000.
• The No. 200 album for the same week of 2006, Yo Gotti's "Back 2 Da Basics" (Mouth of the South/Inevitable/TVT), sold 5,000.
• Average total of the No. 200 album for the same week of the year during the past 10 years (1998-2007): 6,081.

PROGRESS REPORTS

• Brad Paisley leads Hot Country Songs for an eighth time as the light-hearted "Ticks" steps 2-1 this week. "Ticks" is Paisley's fourth consecutive non-holiday chart-topper, a streak last achieved by Tim McGraw from October 2003 through December 2004. In his current No. 1 run, Paisley previously has reigned with "When I Get Where I'm Going," "The World" and "She's Everything." "Ticks" introduces his fifth non-seasonal set, "5th Gear," which arrived at retail Tuesday (June 19). Paisley's 2006 holiday release, "Brad Paisley Christmas," produced five chart entries that peaked between Nos. 41 and 59.

• Sean Kingston enters the CHR/Top 40 airplay chart's upper quarter with his first entry, as the swift-rising Epic single "Beautiful Girls" rockets 17-10 in just its fourth chart week. Kingston's climb to the list's top 10 is the fastest by a male artist's debut single since Chris Brown had an equal four-week sprint in October 2005 with "Run It!," which eventually peaked at No. 1 for seven weeks .. On the Rhythmic Top 40 chart, "Beautiful Girls" is already at No. 5 in only its sixth chart week. Kingston's self-titled debut album drops July 31.

• Social Distortion earns its highest-charting single on the Alternative/Modern Rock chart in more than a decade as "Far Behind" climbs 30-25, to become its biggest hit since "I Was Wrong" peaked at No. 4 in October 1996. "Far Behind" is the quartet's third visit to the chart since then and is the lone new track on its "Greatest Hits" set, due in stores June 26 ... Crowded House ends a 13-year chart absence as "Don't Stop Now" enters the Triple A radio chart at No. 23. The song marks the group's first appearance at Triple A since that chart's 1996 inception and is its first on any radio chart since April 1994, when "Distant Sun" peaked at No. 26 on the Alternative/Modern Rock chart. "Time on Earth," the band's first studio collection since 1993, will be available at retail July 10.

THREE-WAY RACE
LOOMS NEXT WEEK
Bon Jovi 230-240k
White Stripes 210-220k
Brad Paisley 200-210k
Lifehouse 45k
Shop Boyz at 40-50k
Huey at 30k
Mandy Moore 25-30k

Bon Jovi, the White Stripes and Brad Paisley Are All in the Race for the Top Spot on Next Week’s HITS Top 50 Album Chart

June 20, 2007

It’s an old-fashioned three-way dog fight for #1 next week, if you're to believe our usually reliable retail spies from around this great, big, politically divided Red State/Blue State/White Stripes/Paisley country of ours.

Bon Jovi’s Universal Nashville album Lost Highway, thank to selling digital albums as part of the band's tour deal with Ticketmaster, is currently in the lead at 230-240k, and could go even higher, depending on ticket sales.

The White Stripes’ Icky Thump, their first for Warner Bros., is up next at 210-220k, but coming on strong with a huge iTunes number and help from Starbucks.

SBMG Nashville’s Brad Paisley is at 200-210k, for his critically acclaimed new album, 5th Gear, but not completely out of it with accounts like Costco sure to weigh in.

Geffen’s Lifehouse is at around 45k, Universal Republic’s Shop Boyz at 40-50k on the heels of their hellacious “Party Like a Rock Star” hit, Jive/ZLG’s Huey at 30k, give or take, and the new album from Mandy Moore, her first for The Firm Music, at 25-30k.

Next week, pop queens RCA’s Kelly Clarkson and Disney’s Hannah Montana hit the streets and go after the top spot.
