Who else things Diana Ross was good in the Lady sings the Blues I know Diana is no Jazz singer, but I actually liked her version of certain songs in "Lady sings the Blue". I especially loved her version of "Good morning heartache". I am not saying she sang those songs better than Billie, however she gave them her own unique sound. [Edited 6/19/07 20:34pm]

[Edited 6/19/07 20:34pm] I'm not even a Diana Ross fan and probably wouldn't have chosen her to play Billie, but I thought she did an excellent job in this movie. (Guess that's why they didn't ask my opinion! ) I thought her acting and singing was really good. Billy Dee Williams was hot in that movie, too! Never trust anything spoken in the presence of an erection.

I've seen the movie millions of times and I've come to the conclusion that she played the part down to a tee! I mean, even though she didn't look or sound like her, she captured the essence of Billie very well and she probably helped introduce her music to new legions of people. I'm glad she got that Oscar nomination also because she deserved all the acclaim her that role. Good Morning Heartache and Lover Man (Oh Where Can You Be) are two of my favorite music sequences of the film. Check me out and add me on:

I also love "Lover Man" and "Our Love is here to stay" too. Diana acted and sang her socks off in that film. She didn't look or even sound like Billie but she was great all the same.

Me too! The LSTB soundtrack is very skimpy and run-together in parts with the film dialogue and shorter songs. I wish there was a deluxe edition with the best Blue and selected LSTB cuts! [Edited 6/20/07 2:19am] Check me out and add me on:

I swear between her portrayal of Billie, and Bette Midler in 'The Rose', it was like a straight-up public service announcement that kept me from EVER trying hard drugs...EVAH EVAH. I saw those movies when I was waay too little and they scared the sh** out me! I was always struck how well Ross did with the druggie scenes. Oh yes, and Billie Dee was in his HEY DAY then, the epitome of Old Skool fine

Oh yes, and Billie Dee was in his HEY DAY then, the epitome of Old Skool fine True. Diana was so good at being a Junkie, it was scary. I think the most powerful scene in that film was when Billie wanted a fix so badly and as soon as they got home from the club, she tried to rush to the toilet to inject herself, and Louis tried to stopped her. She was prepared to stab him so she could get her fix, that was scary shit!! Every potential Junkie should watch this film for that scene alone. And Billy Dee Williams he was the finest thang I had lay eyes on, up until then(which was 1982 because that was the first time I ever watched the film). He still looks good today, age 70 or so. She was good. The script, on the other hand...It's a classic if you block out any knowledge of Billie Holiday. Michael never stopped!

True. There were so many inaccuracies in the movie but I still enjoyed it. Anyway, although nothing could ever compare to the original Diana did a great job covering Billie's songs. I think Diana should think about recording some more Jazz type songs in the future 'cause it really suits her voice. "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ
"Baby, that was much too fast"...Goodnight dear sweet Prince. I'll love you always

so true...so true. Basically, the film served as an interpreatation of Billie's life and the highs and lows which shaped her musical style. The story was tragic but it a great love story and gave an inside view into what the singers motivation. [Edited 6/20/07 23:18pm]
