my parents had a carpenters record which I would play when I was very young, it's probably lying around somewhere

I remember back when I was going thru this Level 42 obsession, I was hipping my friend to this one track I played for him. I told him it was some old school English Jazz/Funk. He called it "porno music". He was obviously younger than me.
And I think that's what most young folks are stereotyping funk these days. "Porno music". NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

That's been the story of my life. Apparently when I was coming up there was some unspoken rule created by ig'nant Black folks that it's a sin to like Rock and New Wave. No, you gotta get into stuff like Busta Rhymes, P. Diddy, and DMX. Those cats among many other Hip-Hop artists would rpovide for the soundtrack to my brother and his friends various addventures. But when I tried to get them into stuff like Duran, ABC, B-52's, Talking Heads, etc. that stuff would just go over their heads. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

my ultra religious friend on the other hand, almost had a heartattack cause i played both Christian death's "only a theatre of pain" and cocteau twins "garlands" back to back at work.. I played My Bloody Valentine for a co-worker once and she asked me if the tape was warped. I was really obsessed with Loveless for quite a few years in the mid-nineties. I made copies for pretty much every person I knew at one point - I'd slap the cassette into their hand and say 'you have to listen to this!' Almost everybody enjoyed it, though, or at least they felt obligated to humor me enough to tell me they found it interesting. Funny Weepingwall used the phrase whale music, though. I don't play music at work during the day, but I usually stay late and I'll often play a few songs once I'm sure almost everyone's cleared out of the building. I've been red-hot on the band Flying Saucer Attack lately - they have quite a bit of MBV-style noise to their sound, though they've got a touch of cocteau-twin-ambient-style prettiness to them as well. I started to play one of their albums last night, and I kept nudging up the volume because they're really one of those bands that don't sound quite right unless it's reasonably loud, loud enough to make a physical impact, I'd say. It got to the point where it was pretty damned loud - certainly loud enough that you'd have to speak at a high volume to make yourself understood. Unknown to me, one of the controllers was still in his office - he came running into my office and yelled "what the fuck is this whale music bullshit you're listening to? I thought there was a swarm of bees loose in the office or something..." [Edited 6/13/07 19:06pm]

People cant believe i use to be in a band and that i can play electric guitar. They see my bedroom or my walkman (yes walkman), and think "are u retarded" LOL.
But i have introduced people into hammer, milli vanilli (in a funny way) and a newjack track here and there. Yes folks, as odd as it may seem, I can occasionally influence people through music

None of my friends or family understand the music that I listen to...they rather listen to that Tedious Pain, Akorny, Young Jock Strap, Young Breezy Jeezy, etc....they laugh when I tell them that I listen to Prince (the gay guy) Led Zeppelin (why do you listen to white people's music)...etc. [Edited 6/13/07 20:51pm]

I only have one friend that's open enough to go to ANY live show w/ me, the rest of them have pretty shit taste in music. The only person I've been able to convert a bit is my cousin, she likes some respectable stuff... but I still catch her listening to dirty south rap

Believe it or not, I don't go out of my way to introduce my friends to my music. I'm kinda-sorta in my own world, into my own particular headtrip.
I only really talk about music to people that care about music on whim and in that case I casually namedrop something like if we're on the subway and they want to listen to my iPod they can scroll through and we can chit-chat about it, share earbuds or what not, I don't go out of my way. I don't feel like spelling out Slagsmålsklubben to people on a napkin. lollll But I LOVE getting introduced to music by friends. I think that's really cool. [Edited 6/14/07 8:31am]

I know! I'm surprised how many people here don't have a lot of (or any) friends who share their taste in music. I guess that's why we keep coming back here day after day.
