I guess Millie Jackson could've been essential among your record collection back then, Anx razz lol

millie came into my life too late!

I think that Org that thread we had a while back turned you out and turned lose to Millie's power. That thread included myself, TA, BG, and host of other Org regulars who've been Millie fans from way back.

Love Grace---especially for her individuality. My one regret is that I missed buying a photography book I saw in a bookstore YEARS ago that featured her in pictures taken by her then-husband. I passed on it and when I went back, it was gone. Does anyone have it or know the book I'm talking about? Anyway, I guess my fave is "Slave To The Rhythm" like lots of others. I got the 12" version of that. I really like her album covers; well, any photos, actually. They're usually so artistic!

I am so happy that she is coming out with new music. When I was a teenage girl, I admired her because she was so different than most of the female artists during the 1980's because the way she carries herself is just breathtaking to me. smile

I wrote this before I heard Warm Leatherette, but here you go:

4.5 stars

Grace Jones has been called a lot of things, but rarely is she recognized for her music. Throughout the late 70s and early 80s, Grace Jones drew attention as a celebrity without precedent. Her domineering, masculine toughness contrasted an undeniable feminine beauty. Few black women were allowed to experiment to such extremes, but Grace Jones forged her identity as a singular presence, often at the expense of musical recognition.

1981's Nightclubbing, however, stands as a achievement on all levels. At once quirky and accessible, familiar and unpredictable, this album is her crowning achievement. References to androgyny abound. The opening opus of "Walking in the Rain" showcases her dichotomous "feeling like a woman, looking like a man." A raucous cover of "Demolition Man" is cheeky brilliance. And the album cover- oh the album cover. Never has she looked so angular, evocative and alluring.

Musically, the album is a hodgepodge of many styles. From the libidinous funk of the stunning "Pull Up to the Bumper" to the soul-infused disco of "Use Me," she shines. The eerily stark cover of "Nightclubbing" slowly exudes its claustrophobia, while the memorable "Libertango" shuffles along to a reggae-tinged shimmer. The album closes with a rare injection of subtlety, the beautifully sung and vulnerable "I've Done It Again."

Unlike previous affairs, Nightclubbing is consistently enjoyable and memorable. Although much of the album consists of cover songs, this album is the epitome of what Grace Jones represents- an intelligent kaleidoscope of colorful musical styles both black and white. This album, above all others, helps to paint the picture of the multi-faceted and ever enigmatic Grace Jones.

I haven’t seen One Man Show in years. I definitely forgot about the MJ dancing in Part 3.
