All Props to Chaka and Brother Ray-- Great Vocals on it---- but Quincy's "Fake-drum" production just makes that remake sound as stiff as a board....Like Harle said, It just makes it sound like he pushed a few buttons and had them sing over it....

I really like the feel of the BJ and Quincy's original version---That warm sultry Funk groove that builds, Ironically it's the same kinda thing that Chaka would've killed with Rufus....

So, for overall feel, IMO, it's definitely the Brothers Johnson (and the '76 Quincy, lol!!)

Even without the lightning (somebody Get Lee Ritenour or Steve Lukather on the phone)

That's exactly why I don't like the version from Back off the Crack (or whatever that 1990 Quincy album was called). At the time, that was the only version I knew and I didn't like it. Then I heard the original and fell in love. I like the vocals on the remake, but the production is very, very dated and generic. Could very well be a yogurt commercial.

The DJ was kinda shocked since it was a winner and it won her a grammy, she said she was grateful but she did the project out of love & respect for "Uncle Q" as she calls him, and Ray Charles. If they were somebody else, chances are she'd have refused.

I guess Don King or Bob Arum got involved in the UFC and reversed the decision even though I thought the opponent was KO'd...



I still like the Q-version, electronic drum sounds and all.
Hell, it was the 80s and I guess even Q had to bow down.
Btw, those electronic drums may have been triggered by Harvey Mason who's credited as the drummer on the track.
Bruce Swedien is credited with "drum sounds".

It seems that James Ingram was the original male half of the duet and you can hear one of his signature ad libs that was left in the mix at the 4:11 mark.

It also won Chaka Khan a Grammy (for what it's worth).

The Brothers Johnson by FAR. I hated the Ray Charles and Chaka Khan version. It sounded like the other stuff from that era.....watered down crossover pop shit. I'll say it again....late 80s, horrible years.....HORRIBLE years.

Hell no, it's much worse now. However, the late 80s was the infancy stages of how it eventually would get worse and worse until it ended up the way it is now. In the late 80s, more and more R&B artists tried to get crossover pop hits and abandoned funk (which was played mainly on R&B stations only). Today, shit hop dominates.....which is what.....today's crossover pop.

I am more partial to the Q version over the BJ version. Probably because Chaka sang it. Now, I prefer the remix over the album version. I think the remix has a more euro-funk flavor verses the album version.

Now, don't get me wrong, I do love BJ's version. The arrangement is killer.
