Jackson acquires Eminem song rights

Michael Jackson has bought some of the rights to Eminem's back catalogue in a new deal.

The singer has also acquired rights to music by Shakira, Beck and Bjork in a deal with Viacom for his company. Jackson already holds the rights to the copyright of The Beatles, and is proud of his new accomplishment, Famous Music LLC.

"This is a milestone event for Sony/ATV Music Publishing," he said in a statement. "The diverse collection of songs in this catalogue range from timeless classics to contemporary hits, and I am pleased to add the acquisition of Famous Music to Sony/ ATV."

Michael Jackson and Sony's Sony/ATV Music Publishing has acquired Famous Music LLC from Viacom it was announced today (May 30).

Famous Music's catalogue includes over 125,000 songs, giving Sony/ATV ownership of classic songs like "That's Amore," "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Aint Got That Swing)," and "Silver Bells," while contemporary hits like "Hips Don't Like" (Shakira), "The Real Slim Shady" and "Without Me" (Eminem) are also included in the purchase.

"This is a milestone event for Sony/ATV Music Publishing," Michael Jackson said in a statement. "The diverse collection of songs in this catalogue range from timeless classics to contemporary hits, and I am pleased to add the acquisition of Famous Music to Sony/ATV."

Famous Music also owns the musical catalogs of artists like Bjork, Duke Ellington, Bush, Boyz II Men, and Beck.

Current songwriters on the company's roster include Akon, Shakira, Busta Rhymes, Eminem, Nappy Roots, Linda Perry, Fred Jerkins III, 7Aurelius and others.

Famous' Extreme division also supplies high quality recordings and musical compositions for use in TV and radio advertisements, film and television productions, major network and cable broadcasts worldwide.

"The Famous Music catalogue is a world-class asset filled with evergreen songs that people know and love," added Martin N. Bandier, Chairman and CEO, Sony/ATV Music Publishing. "The depth and breadth of the catalogue is what truly makes it great, and I strongly believe that the addition of the Famous catalogue and its songwriters to Sony/ATV is another step in our long-range growth plans. In addition, we are pleased to be entering the production music business through Famous' Extreme division. Extreme's valuable creative team and unique business model will be a terrific complement to our core music publishing business."

Famous Music was founded in 1928 and is one the largest independent music publishers.

The purchase of Famous Music comes on the heels of Sony/ATV's acquisition of the legendary body of work published by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who wrote, arranged and produced hits like Elvis Presley's "Jailhouse Rock", " The Drifters' "On Broadway," Wilbert Harrison's "Kansas City" and the Clovers' "Love Potion No. 9," The Coasters' "Yakety Yak" and numerous other hits.

Sony/ATV Music Publishing was established in 1995 by Michael Jackson and Sony.

The company owns or administers over 500,000 copyrights, including works by The Beatles, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, The Everly Brothers, Hank Williams, Jimi Hendrix and numerous others.

Great, now Michael can whore out Eminem's songs like he did with the Beatles catalog. Everytime I hear "Hello GoodBUY" on that Target commercial, I see red.

No, they don't own the Eminem catalog. They just own the rights to "The Real Slim Shady" and "Without Me".

Big deal, I've never even heard the song Without Me, is really notable out of those 125,000 songs, seems ppl want to make a big deal because it's eminem.

Possibly, but MJ & Eminem did have that feud going on a few years ago so it is kind of a big deal that MJ now owns the rights to two of his biggest songs....But you've never heard of "Without Me"? Hmm...That was a bit hit for Eminem and "The Real Slim Shady" is probably Eminem's biggest song to date.

i can't believe you never heard that song, were u living under a rock in 2002

“Without Me” was Eminem’s most successful single at that point. It reached #1 in many countries, including the U.K., Australia and New Zealand It also reached the #2 spot in the U.S.- none of his singles other than “Lose Yourself” have ever charted as high.

“Without Me” was nominated for Record of the Year at the Grammy Awards of 2003 being Eminem’s first song to receive a Grammy nomination in a major category. It also received a nomination for Best Male Rap Solo Performance

Sony is paying for it! althought it will be included in the ATV catalogue i dont think MJ will benefit unless he pays part of it!

MJ share of the ATV is less then 25% now and was about 50% just a few yrs back

I looked it up on youtube, and I remember the vid, but I'm not a radio or mtv person so the song didn't immediately come to mind.

No, Mj will benefit from it anyway the atv catalouge is a shared venture between Mj and sony, what will benefit sony will benefit Mj, and MJ didn't sell 25% of his share, that was a tabloid Garbage, that was denied by his spokeperson raymone Bain many times.

and now he bought the rights for two biggest eminem songs lol , this another evidence to prove that Mj is Not Broke...

Whenever Eminem comes out with his "comedy" comeback video (the themes of his singles always follow the same sequence), it immediately replaces the last one. 'The Real Slim Shady', 'Without Me' and 'Just Lose It' are pretty much interchangeable.

Michael is still 50% owner of Sony/ATV under his new trust New Horizon Trust. Sony/ATV as an entity will pay for the purchase of the Viacom/Famous music, Michael personally doesn't have to give a dime neither does Sony...its SONY/ATV the company that is purchasing famous music.Michael's SONY/ATV has always been owned by him via his trusts,he owned his 50% under MJ-ATV trust but now he's moved MJATV & MJPT to New Horizon Trust where he is 100% owner of his trust so essentially it is Michael owning 50% of Sony/ATV.
