I finally got my top 10 together after about a week of research and what not:

1.) James Brown [ & the JB's ]
2.) Stevie Wonder
3.) Ray Charles
4.) Aretha Franklin
5.) Marvin Gaye
6.) Sam Cooke
7.) Otis Redding
8.) Little Richard
9.) Jackie Wilson
10.) Sly & the Family Stone

numbers 11 through 30 I will have up on tomorrow ...

Not bad. Under my criteria, I see Sam Cooke and Jackie as the "same" so for both to be in the top 10. I wouldn't have them both, and maybe even Otis Redding as well. 1 or the other.

Also, I'd replace Sly with P but you knew that already. evillol

Jackie and Sam were not the same, they both had the same great voice but thats just about it. Jackie's performance's and shows were on a whole 'nother level. He also performed in a lot more of the 'chitlin circuit' venues the Sam.

Sam was deeply rooted in gospel more then 'Mr. Excitement' Also their audiences were, while being the same were also very different.

Otis was more 'soulful' hen both.

Interesting start.

If you go by a strict definition of R&B/Soul based on its origins, i'll be curious to see if you can get out of the late 50s, definitely the 60s and most of the 70s without running out of spots.

That's what happened to me. wink

The hardest part I have is on some of the great bluesman.
-B.B. King
-Bobby Blue Bland
-Big Joe Turner
-Little Milton
ect.

I'm having a tough choice if these guys should be in the top 100 or not. They road on that fine line between southern R&B and Blues. Similar to Bobby Womack, Johnny Taylor and the likes but they were more down home Soul.

And then you have folks like Gil Scott-Heron and Nina Simone who make it even tougher on whats R&B.

- D' is way too low
- Teena should be on the list especially ahead of En Vogue
- Slave should be on there as well
- Tony Toni Tone' should be on there if En Vogue is on there
- Minnie should be on there
- Boys 2 Men should be on there if New Edition is on there and especially if En Vogue is on there

I guess you can see my issue with having En Vogue on there higher than a lot of folk and then not having the above mentioned artists on there while EV is on there.
