Great comment from Richard Marx on American Idol!

Saw this and i cracked up, Richard is fucking great. People dont realize this but he is one of the most successful songwriters over the last 20 years. To date he has written 14 number ones, for himself and others.

From his Website when asked....

Hi Richard:
You've often made comments about reality shows and how many of the contestants only sing and cannot write or play instruments. Why do you feel all three are important? For me, I look for the voice and personality. You are one of the few that excel in all three areas, but I have found in other cases, great songwriters do not make great singers and vice versa. (Karen, NY)

Karen,

I believe if you could find any of the actual quotes I've made about this topic, you'll see that what I have said is this:
Having young singers, even ones who really suck, sing a bunch of old songs to horrible, karaoke-like backing tracks has nothing to do with artistry. Yes, Kelly Clarkson is great. Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson can sing, too. But they are by far the minority. The show is mostly about parading sub-mediocrity in front of the American public to butcher classic songs while selling Coca-Cola and cell phones.
What I also said was that a much less popular show, "Nashville Star," at least has their contestants often playing instruments and performing songs they've co-written. Much closer to the concept of artistry.
And all of this is meaningless compared to the fact that "American Idol" is a SINGING competition being judged, in part, by Paula Abdul.

Paula....ABDUL!!!!!

Nothing else to say.

I met him here in NYC and had no issue with him, very approachable. I think his main point is, no one is being tested. I have never seen Nashville star, but i heard how they do it, and mainly 99% of the Idol people wouldnt even be able to audition for this show. I wouldnt mind idol if it functioned as something more than a "sober" karoake show.

ironically, I seem to remember that Richard Marx was named as one of the songwriters for Paula's proposed 1993/1994 album.

I remember when he threatened to kick MTV Veejay Adam Curry's ass over some remark. Can you imagine the hair pulling?

He seems to have a very sarcastic sense of humor that can definitely rub some folks the wrong way...

Have you heard those dudes sitting next to her sing?
If singing talent is needed to be a judge
then none of those 3 is qualified.

Richard Marx is so gangsta in that interview! He's right with what he said.

But anyway, I remember when Richard was a pop artist in his own right. He was never funky at all. But he was (still is) very good composing a pop melody with a grand piano.

I love when a pop star comes out and takes a stand on something and it's the most generic safe thing that could be said.

Also, why's he got to kick around Paula Abdul? He's not really known as a great vocalist. The guy's written some pleasant enough songs, but he's not going to go down as a legend, especially for his singing. Plus, that Paula Abdul joke was old 5 years ago about 2 weeks after the show started.

And what's with people criticizing this show for not being something it isn't intended to be. They're looking for good singers to give a contract to, and letting America vote on it. Nowhere does it say they're looking for songwriters or musicians or choreographers or producers. I don't get all the hate this show gets for being a singing competition. It's not about any of those other things, so why are you coming down on it for not being what it obviously isn't trying to be?

I dont think people are knocking it for what it stands for, because even people who have been on the show, like Jovi,Manilow etc , have said the same things about the show, i think they are more concerned with the genre as a whole, his remarks are more that the show isnt really turning out anyone like that, well rounded, The thing is now the show isnt even about best voice, its more your image at this point, and as we have seen the sales of these artists lately arent coming close to what it was in its beginnings. As for Richard, i think as a vocalist he's way underrated, as a songwriter he needs to be given his due, it aint easy writing a POP song and its not rewarding in terms of acclaim, but he ranks (in terms of #1's) along with some of the best most noted writers, and right now has 14 number 1 hits, for himself and others. And lets not forget he gave Luther one of his biggest hits ever, and though it may not be a gem, he fucking gave Nsync and Timberfake something to sing to keep themselves from being nothing and gone in 15 minutes.
