D'angelo's Voodoo, Chicago- 21, and Mariah Carey's Rainbow CD come to mind. I'm sure there are many more atrocities I paid money for, but I try to put them out of my mind.

Oh, no! I don't know if you're familiar with their early music, but if you want anything more representative of Chicago you have to buy an album from their earlier days, late 60s thru 70s - but prior to 1978.

If you want something representative of Chicago you have to listen to their original lineup. They were much more inventive, hard rocking and jazz influenced with Terry Kath in the band before he died in 1978.

Their first 3 albums were double albums. And there are 6 that were recently remastered/reissued:

Chicago Transit Authority
Chicago II
Chicago III
Carnegie Hall, Vols. 1-4 (Chicago IV)
Chicago V
Chicago VI

Then there's the new double cd greatest hits:
The Very Best Of Chicago: Only The Beginning

Anything you buy by them with guitarist Terry Kath is better than their 80s-90s music.

Of that list, I like CTA, but I've always loved
VII the "gold countyfair" album (not on your list)

.

This was a very ambitious stab at jazz with hand percussion.
great vocal harmonies with Pointer Sisters "Skinny Boy" and Beach Boys "Wishing You Were Here". Vox make them sound like they were trying to cop EWF's bag, back then. The horns and flutes are great on "Aire/Devil Sweet"!

They fall off a lot afterwards; too much of a MOR band.dead

The very first Chicago cd I ever bought was the VII album. But so far it's not remastered yet. Everything they did up to that point (except their live Japan concert) has been remastered lately. Hopefully they'll remaster VII soon too, because it needs it. Danny Seraphine is an underrated drummer. I never hear anything about him when people bring up drummers. Ohhh, yeahhh, "Aire/Devil's Sweet" is sweeet. nod Speaking of sweets of another kind, they did A LOT of SUITES on their early albums. If folks just listen to what they did in the 80s and 90s they won't realize how daring they were for a rock group. Which is sort of why it's not totally accurate to describe them as such.

And they always used about 3 different lead singers in the early days, but always had a unified sound.

Later on though...too many typical 80s inspired, Cetera sung ballads. disbelief

SkletonKee

ive got two...

1) Vanessa Williams 3rd album (after Comfort Zone)..that has the distinction of being the *only* album I have ever returned...(back in the day when The Wherehouse used to let you return stuff)

2) Lil Louis...the worst of the worst prince-related stuff..they slapped a big ole "including songs written and produced by Prince" on it...i bought it and only three songs are prince related. and even these are bad...

Oh believe me, Supernova, I know of the greatness of Chicago's 70s music. I even liked their music from 78-80 when they had pretty much fallen off the charts before making their adult contemporary comeback with the cheesy ballads in 82 through 90. My favorite Chicago albums are VI, VII, VIII, X, and XI. However, I will admit that their 80s ballads, while cheesy, are a guilty pleasure of mine. I know it's bad, but I can't help it! For some reason I like that stuff too.

That said, it inspired me to buy Chicago 21, and at that point they had truly fallen off completely and couldn't write any good tunes anymore. It was definitely one of the worst albums I've ever heard.

However, this is still a band that is worth catching on tour- they're fantastic.

Rudy

in 1980, 3rd grade I was just discovering the Beatles. I bought Sgt. Pepper at the mall and put in on the record player, and realized it wasn't the Beatles at all, but the cheesy soundtrack from the awful movie (Bee Gees, Peter Frampton)

I cried as my older brothers laughed at me for being such a dumbass

The movie was wretched too. The only redeeming factor...(and really it didn't redeem the movie at all, but it was a respite), was the fact that Earth Wind & Fire played their cover of "Got To Get You Into My Life."
