Madonna Voted Top Female Artist of All Time

LONDON (Reuters) - "Material Girl" Madonna has had another No. 1 chart success -- this time heading a poll for music's 100 top female artistes.

She romped home to the No. 1 spot with 17 percent of votes cast by viewers of VH1 music channel in a poll to find the greatest women in music over the past 50 years.

With a career covering 19 years, 12 albums, three world tours and 60 million album sales, the star with the ever-changing public image, beat a galaxy of performers.

VH1 said Friday that over 750,000 votes were cast.

Kylie Minogue confirmed her popularity, winning second place in the top five, ahead of Celine Dion, Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin.

Kate Bush, forever famous for her 1978 debut single Wuthering Heights, was best-placed British singer, in 10th place.

Britney Spears was 9th, with fellow Americans ahead of her -- Tina Turner (6); Mariah Carey (7) and Janet Jackson (8).

Most of the greats made it into the chart. Barbra Streisand (22), Dusty Springfield (30), Shirley Bassey (45), Dolly Parton (47) and Kirsty McColl (74)

Billie Holiday came in at 50th, Yoko Ono 99th and in 100th spot was Erykah Badu.

Kate Bush should've been no.1 (in an ideal world) but to be fair i'm surprised she did as well as she did considering she's done nothing for nigh on 10 years.

And altho' i'm no fan, props to Madonna,
no surprise tho'...

If they were gonna talk about who's hot they shouldn't have mentioned the little factors of "all time" or "the past 50 years"...that's just absurd.

Specious.

Appalling.

Preposterous.

PRE-POS-TER-OUS!

They should have had musicians vote. None of these performers would come close to a top 50 list. None of them, Aaron, and you know this! mad

But seriously, I know these things are done partly for the marketing of said publication/network that polls people.

Did I mention this was a complete and total JOKE??

Like it or not, Madonna is the most important female artist of the past 50 years. She is the one who will be remembered centuries down the line. She is the one who has made it ok for women to express their wants and desires. She deserves to be number one! No one comes close- not Aretha, not Tina Turner, not anybody.

I'm not a Fan of Polls&things because it's a Sad Joke.Nobody IMHO is truly Number 1 of anything because there are always Arguments made for at least 99 other People why they should be Number 1.I Will Say in Madonna's Defense She Belongs on any Top 200 to 100 All-Time Poll She Matters overall but Number 1 is not far to the other 99 Women IMHO.

yes, it's a joke. there's no qualifiers in what they're making her #1. except for ARTIST. and by that, we're to assume music artist. that's not to say that there aren't more talented female musicians. or more talented female performers. but artists? hmmm, yes. culture vulture or not, i have to say she's #1 when it comes to artistic expression, statement, trend-setting, button-pushing, longevity, etc. but then, i already thought that before this list was compiled.

Well put! I agree wholeheartedly. I also discovered that this was a poll run by VH1 UK, thus explaining Kylie's placement at number 2.

Bleh. Moonie, this is something we'll NEVER agree on. Madonna is a social phenomenon more than she has EVER been a musical one. And most in the industry will tell you the same thing if you get them away from cameras and microphones. Some, Tori Amos being one, will tell you that IN FRONT of the cameras and microphones.

I tend to think that people are AFRAID to admit that they like Madonna, for fear of sounding "mainstream." It's cool not to like her. It's cool to dismiss her. It's not cool to be a self-respecting straight person over 18 and like her. I'd say she doesn't get the credit she deserves. It's ok, though, we can agree to disagree.

Well... I don't know about Kylie deserving to be second.. but hey ... I'll keave that one for now...

But I can't dispute Madonna being in first place... you can't deny her impact... musically or socially... she deserves it... it didn't just come to her, she worked for it...

She is the one that is prominent in my mind anyway when it comes to being top female artist.

She stands out... like it or not, and not for trivial reasons... her work speaks for itself.

Blasphemy! The one who got me into Kylie thinks she doesn't deserve number 2? wink Actually, I don't either, but I'm pleased that she's getting some exposure. This was VH1 UK, by the way, which explains her high placement.

moonbeam---u said that Madonna plays instruments? Since when?

Yeah she can strum a few chords on guitar. But she is by no means established on guitar. Her vocals arent mind-blowing either.

She is pure theatrics, imo. She owes the gay community a lot because they're the only reason she's up there.

She played guitar before she even had her debut CD for a band called "The Breakfast Club." She also plays drums and keyboards.

But Madonna is a musician. She writes her own music. She plays instruments.

In a pedestrian way, yes. But I have to tell ya, she should leave the axe playing to Nancy Wilson of Heart, Ani DiFranco, Joni Mitchell, and EVEN Courtney Love. It's not like she's an accomplished musician on anything. She just recently learned how to put a few chords together on guitar. I saw her on Leno one night and she was struggling with it. Someone I worked with was listening to some of her earliest music, and good Lord! The woman sounded like a chipmunk, her vocals were so untrained. It was sort of weird to me, because I had never heard whatever it was that my co-worker was playing. But there was a striking difference between some of her earliest music and the music of the past decade with regard to her vocals.

And the fact is that she has had a greater impact on society than any other female, by FAR.

In what way?
You're talking about society, but I'm talking about MUSICAL impact. She's not even close to the likes of Joni, Ani, Carole King (who has written a ton of classics with her ex Gerry Goffin which qualifies her without her solo music), Aretha or Billie Holiday at their peaks, Sinéad O'Connor at her peak, Bjork NOW, etc. These are women who have pushed music forward more than Madonna EVER has. Their MUSICAL influence and impact blows hers out of the water in every conceivable way except commercially - and we all know that doesn't always have anything to do with musicality.

When I listen to their work it's extremely hard to take Madonna seriously.

Did somebody say "quality cheese"?? wink

On the other side of the coin (male), even Nirvana has had a bigger musical impact in brief career than Madonna - not that I think their influence has turned out for the best. I don't.

Actually I've always said I used to like some of Madonna's earliest music, because it was obviously just made to dance to. Songs like Holiday, Dress You Up, La Isla Bonita, Everybody, Material Girl...

Come on now, you know I can't be in with the "cool" crowd: I STILL listen to Prince! biggrin

Madonna has always been a brilliant businesswoman in music. ALWAYS. I've always given her credit for that. She's done what she's wanted to with her career (at least in music, if not acting). But anything she's done pales in comparison to the ladies above I mentioned, and more if I thought about it. Musically speaking.

Where's Jnoel at?

Oh my. If Madonna is provoking you to think, you guys weren't thinking much were ya? wink

As far as imitators go; Nirvana has them too. And it's partly why rock music has declined since their shot heard 'round the world.
