Massive Attack w/ Tracey Thorn: Protection

...

This girl I know needs some shelter,
She don't believe anyone can help her
Shes doing so much harm, doing so much damage,
But you don't want to get involved
You tell her she can manage

And you can't change the way she feels,
But you could put your arms around her...

I know you want to live yourself,
But could you forgive yourself
If you left her just the way
You found her...

I'll stand in front of you
I'll take the force of the blow...
Protection...

Your'e a boy, and I'm a girl
But you know you can lean on me...

And I dont have no fear,
I'll take on any man here
Who says thats not the way it should be...

I'll stand in front of you,
Take the force of the blow...
Protection...

Shes a girl, and youre a boy,
Sometimes you look so small, you look so small...

You got a baby of your own
When your baby's grown, she'll be the one
To catch you when you fall...

I'll stand in front of you,
I'll take the force of the blow...
Protection

Youre a girl, and I'm a boy... (x4)

Sometimes you look so small, need some shelter
Just runnin round and round, helter skelter
And I've leaned on you for years,
Now you can lean on me
And thats more than love, thats the way
It should be,

Now I can't change the way you think,
But I can put my arms around you...

Thats just part of the deal
Thats the way I feel
I put my arms around you...

I stand in front of you,
Take the force of the blow...
Protection...

Your'e a boy, and I'm a girl... (x4)

Great track, this. 'Protection' is for me Massive Attack's best album.

Nice tune.

Payback guitar. thumbs up!

Now this brings up what seems to be the unanswerable question.
Is this trance, ambient, trip-hop, electronica...etc.? wink

Now, for me, this would be trip-hop, a 'genre' that Massive Attack, along with Portishead, helped pioneer in the early '90s.

This is a great song, my favorite by Massive Attack. I'd go with trip-hop as well. I would, however, go further back than Massive Attack and Portishead in the 90s. Neneh Cherry was exploring similar sounds, with some of the same people, in 89 on Raw Like Sushi. The song Manchild comes immediately to mind. Some will probably disagree, and some may even think it goes earlier than that.

Triphop. I call it "pop" myself, but then again...

Ambient has very little to do with rhythmic music or vocals.

You're welcome! I wasn't even aware that Protection had a video until a few years ago.

Me, Too!

BTW, I get the sense that this track that was the catalyst for Tracey and Ben (Everything But the Girl) to transition from a Jazz-inflected Pop group to more of a dance/electro unit, (for better or worse, depending on your point of view, Lol!)

If you like that I'd advise you get the following cd's:

Everything but the girl 'Walking Wounded' and Tracy Thorn's brilliant new solo cd ' Out of the woods'. This album has restored my faith in modern music !

i started a Massive Attack thread a while ago. i was explaining that i'd heard so much about them and was severely underwhelmed by the greatest hits collection. i know how those can be, but i think the gist of most of the feedback was "you had to be there" (in london early 90s) to fully grasp and appreciate them.
