FISHBONE - Still Stuck In Your Throat review

This album is very tight.

Reflects a variety of styles from classic F'Bone like "Jack Ass Brigade" to post Temple Bar with "Party With Saddam" to a perfectly executed PFunk tribute "We Just Lose Our Minds" (clocks in at over 9 minutes). There's a cover of Sublime's "Date Rape" plus studio versions of Temple Bar-era tunes like "Permadawnutt", "Skank 'N Go Nutts" and "Let Them Hos Fight".

Fishbone has toured sporadically around US and even into Europe, but if you're stuck in an unfunky zone then this disc will bring you up to date and you'll get inspired to knutt-up on their next show nearest you.

Here's What's up next:

May 2007

25 @ Galaxy Theater Santa Ana (California - USA) -confirmed-
26 @ Canyon Theather Augora Hills (California - USA) -confirmed-

Huh, sporadically? They tour non-stop don't they? I love me some Fishbone, but this album was a bit too much for my taste. Too much all over the place, that is...

uhh yeah, but they tour heavily in certain spots like West Coast, Squaw Valley (Norwood has a snowboard fetish) and to Europe, but not much on East coast or the South.

Aha, that explains it! "Hey guys, we need to tour the Alps, we have a lot of fans in Portes du Soleil"! cool

The new Fishbone I would compare to Pink Floyd without Roger Waters. That being said, still a great live band. Nowhere nearly as great as they once were though.

Well, you have heard of the red hot chili peppers. Add some energy, double the musicality and some extra horns, then you have Fishbone. But beware, they are nutty, eccentric, they can go from metal to funk without warning. But then again, being a Prince fan has probably prepared you somewhat... smile

I'd say start with Truth and Soul:

(1988) Great album, rock, ska and funk with a lot of great pop-songs and melodies.

Then, if you like funk better than rock:

(2000) The psychotic friends nuttwerx. If only for the album cover! Focused album, some guest appearances (Gwen Stefani, George Clinton, half of the peppers, a.o.).

I'd check out the one before Truth and Soul, the one that has 'Party At Ground Zero' on it. Great funk and ska record, way before ska was ruined in the later 90's

That's as profound as saying "I've got dingleberries hanging from my asshole". Do you have anything to say about the new album? That's the topic, asswipe.

In Your Face is a classic album. So is Give a Monkey a Brain and He'll Swear He's the Center of the Universe

basically any album before they broke up and kept the name Fishbone is great

it was sad to see No Doubt, 311 , Sublime and the Chilli Peppers make it big while all along Fishbone was making better music

Yeah, I have it, Jazz. The album is indeed bangin'. I've met Norwood but I know his brother, Lonnie of Weapon of Choice, better. I grew up seeing Fishbone several times live. One of the benifits of growing up in So. Cal. I've seen Fish and the Peppers so many times in small clubs, it's not even funny. This dating back to 84.

Some clarifications:

Norwood (bass) and Fish (drums) are brothers, co-founders of Fishbone. The group is currently under Norwood's direction. Last time I saw Fish he was drumming with Justin Timberlake and then with Jada Pinket's band...Wicked Wisdom.

Arik (guitar) and Lonnie (bass) Marshall are also brothers. Arik sat in for a few moths as RHCP guitarist and has been Macy Gray's road guitarist. Lonnie runs Weapon of Choice where Arik used to play. The Marshall Bros laid the riffs on Tone Loc's big rap hits "Funky Cold Medina and "Wild Thang".

U are so right. For some reason, I've always thought Norwood and Lonnie were brothers. Probably cuz they both played bass. I've only met Norwood once and Lonnie was the one who introduced me to him, so there is probably another reason right there. I forgot all about Arik playing with the Peppers. If u blinked twice, you would have missed him. The Peppers didn't want to hold on to the two brothers that they had on axe for some reason. Dwayne Blackbyrd and Arik.
