Neil Young. Fucking love the guy, but his voice isn't going to be winning any contests.

actually neil for his genre has one of the best voices...
Dylan too (dylan can actually sing well, but chooses to sing a certain way for style purposes,
most folk singers do that

Dont' get me wrong, I like Neil's voice. But it's this peculiar nasal sort of whine he's got going on that's put off listeners sometimes.

Madonna - mentioning her name with the word singing is hilarious

Mary J.- Clive has hyped her to no end but live she is hard on the ears.

Alicia Keys - ditto

Janet - Jimmy and Terry were brilliant in covering up for her lack of vocal skills...she has been exposed now.

Britt, Ashley & Jessica Simpson- 3 good jokes.

Keshia Cole - on command dry heaving.

so? she was about 1,000,000 times more charismatic than any of the skinny trog bitches in the top 40 these days, and from the biographies i read on janis, she was never wanting for male companionship...or FEMALE companionship, for that matter. yeah, she was an ugly duckling - that was part of the drive that made her successful. she was made fun of throughout her youth by people like you for being a dumpy troll, and she wanted a big reason to tell them to fuck off. lol

And it certainly looks that way! ugly!
I don't think she enjoyed anything, too busy saying just that. god bless 'er if anyone must

she tried and she failed
The top 40 is nothing to go by these days, don't you know anything?

Try ing 2 b black doesn't necessarily mean 1 has soul - God forbid!

yeah, she was a real failure dude - died in obscurity lol

There are some singers who technically can't sing, but who imo are effective as vocalists - such as -

Bob Dylan - He sounds like Bob Dylan, which is fine by me
Jimi Hendrix - While very variable as a singer, at times he could actually sing, as on '(Have You Ever Been To) Electric Ladyland', with his excellent post-Curtis Mayfield falsetto, and also imo on 'Drifting' and 'Angel'. Jimi probably had potential as a soul balladeer, on the strength of these.
Mick Jagger
Johnny Rotten/ Lydon
Jim Morrison - The Doors 'LA Woman' track is to me the ultimate 'singer clearly hilariously drunk but still somehow good' song biggrin
Billie Holiday (small range, not my fav jazz singer, but effective)

And arguably James Brown and Louis Armstrong, Louis being one of the major vocal stylists of the 20th century.

But sorry Janis fans, I could never stomach Janis Joplin. She tried so hard to sound black, it was painful. Give me her mentor, Bessie Smith, any day. smile

Ah... the voice of reason.

But what does Janis being ugly have to do with how good or bad she sings?

I wasn't talking about her appearance. That really is irrelevant to me - it's all in the sounds smile . I dislike her voice, and her imo over the top efforts to sound 'black' and soulful. I think she ruined most of the songs she attempted.

The fact that she normally looked like a bag lady and yet puzzlingly still got plenty laid is neither here nor there. lol

I've also just thought of another 'non-singer' who works for me at times -

Ringo Starr - especially on his later Beatles lead vocals, with 'What Goes On' from 'Rubber Soul' (he guesses from memory), 'A Little Help From My Friends', and those cute children's songs 'Yellow Submarine' and 'Octopus' Garden'. Ringo had a touchingly straight-forward touch on these, which I like. The backing ain't bad either. biggrin

No, your reasons are pefectly valid. I was asking thedribbler who had posted this earlier:

She always was a bit of an eyesore though.

Her singin' about unrequited love wouldn't leave anyone thinkin', "oh but how could he have not wanted..." etc. for very long.

Live Mary J.Blige doesn't sound too good, but there something heartbreaking about her voice, Mariah may be better technically, but Mary is more raw.

nod I REALLY agree with this list!

I like Mary, but the sista CANNOT sing. I have NEVER seen her sound good live - NEVER!

Keshia Coles is just abominable to me! My brother said she sounds like she's being stabbed to death.

Madonna? Singer? falloff

Janet - I blame her and Madonna for the legions of scantily clad, non-singers with lavish videos and choreography that we see now.

Alicia is cool, because she tries, but she CANNOT sing either. She sounds terrible live.

I can't even bother to comment on the other three.

I'd say Marilyn Manson. I love him, and he sings good on some songs, but lately his voice just sounds so horrible. Go to the link below and listen to his acoustic version of What Goes Around Comes Around (JT) and see what I'm talking about...

Michael may still be able to sing, but no where has good as he use to. This is a person who rarely sings live at his own concerts, anymore.

Can't stand that voice. There are a few people that seem to get away with that throaty business and passing it off as singing and Rod's the worst culprit. Switch off the TV everytime he's own.

Add to that Bob Dylan. Great songwriter but I saw footage of him singing Like a Rolling Stone and I had to turn the sound down. Granted there are some who have genuine character to their voice but aren't classed as great singers e.g. Jimi Hendrix. He has a quality to his voice that is way better than Rod Stewart.

I guess I use the same reason for Bjork whenever someone says she can't sing because people tell all of the time.....but I think it depends on the style of music they're doing. Certain voices couldn't pull off an R & B song or pull off an Aretha song, but their voices work for their type of music. I just scrolled up and saw where people said this about Dylan.

I liked her vocals with No Doubt, mainly their early albums, but I can't stand when she actually tries to sing on her newer solo stuff.
