The Best Year ever thought was 1967. What A Year, by far the best ever.

Which artist from the 90's - today Is doing something that either doesn't SAMPLE something from the 70's or isn't heavily influenced by the production,Instrumentation,or fashions..from the 70's ?

I used to say 1975-1985 but I've changed it to 1974-1984. The early part of 1985 was good but when the summer got here, things were first getting "shitty".

Not me. I chose 1974-1984. I was a teenager in the 1980s but in the late 1970s, I was younger than a teenager.

The 1980's is my childhood era. Michael, Prince, & Madonna set new standards. Hip-hop/rap was a lot more danceable and uptempo a bit. Synthpop, electro-funk, & new wave rules!!! Heavy-Metal/Pop-Metal was REAL rock & roll. And of course, (latin) freestyle was sweet to me (especially The Cover Girls, Debbie Deb, & Expose).

I totally agree about 1990-1993, maybe possibly even a little of 1994. The early part of the decade, house influenced music was all over the airwaves with folks like Black Box, The 49ers, C&C Music Factory, Cee Cee Penniston, Crystal Waters, etc. Slow to midtempo shit hop was around back then (which they did NOT play in the clubs I went to) but there was still plenty of funky ass uptempo rap like The Two Live Crew, The Dogs, Sir Mix-A-Lot, Tag Team, etc. Stripped down boring ass midtempo shit hop didn't dominate everything yet.

As for Borepac Shakur, I hated to see him die because I knew he would reach "legend" status that he didn't deserve. I found his music to be no different than all the other boring midtempo rap acts at the time but he also promoted a thug image which really made me want to vomit all over the place. Hell, if people were ever going to grow past a stupid "thug" image, they sure as hell weren't going to get away from it once someone like Borepac was promoted to legend status. Now, the shit will live forever....unfortunately.

Yep, even the most like-minded people still have their own tastes and opinions, which is a good thing because it keeps life interesting. As for "poets", you know where I think poetry on records should be.....not in the record stores but in the library next to the other poetry records. Music catches my ear first and lyrics mean nothing to me. It's not lyrics that make my ass wanna shake.



Exactly. If rap must exist, then it needs to be something uptempo that can compete with actual music. All that slow midtempo rap existed in the late 1980s but most of it was underground where it belonged. I remember rappers complaining back then about DJs and radio stations not playing their records because they didn't consider it "music".

I agree with the radio stations back then. But, if you notice, the rap that did get airplay back in the 1980s was mostly full-fledged jams made from scratch with instruments by folks like The Egyptian Lover, Pretty Tony and Freestyle, Twilight 22, Whodini, etc. These were jams that could be played right along side of funk and never dull the party.

As for all that "thug" bullshit, those artists are just being a white record exucutive's clown for his amusement.
