People seem to sleep on Musiq A lot of the so-called R&B headz on here seem to always leave Musiq out of the mix when talking about what's good in R&B. This dude has had a solid progression as a writer and singer. "Love" was a great song, not good but GREAT. His new song "Teachme" is up there with some of Prince's ballads musically and lyrically,as always he's comng from the heart and dealing with real life instead of fluff, double entendres and metaphors. I gotta give dude major respect as an artist. He's not the greatest singer nor does he try to be. His songs are solid, though. Although he's not in the same place as the general mindset of the public these days, I think there will be a time that will come around when his songs are HIGHLY covered. Its hard to write earnest, heartfelt songs these days that aren't negative and sell them to a record label. The labels all want drama. Much respect to him.

Musiq is good, he has a lot of talent, but i'm sorry, i just have not cared for his last few albums. He has certain songs that I am fond of, one of which that you mentioned "Love", but when i think of R&B artists that are good at the moment, I only start to remember him near the end of my list. He doesn't stand out a lot for me. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

i think he seems to have lost folks with Soulstar, the 3rd album. 2nd album was good. my fave and the fave of many i hear. debut was solid too. don't have the 4th and latest joint. i hear he's awful live tho. that'll kill the interest real fast. [Edited 5/15/07 6:40am]

[Edited 5/15/07 6:40am] I agree! His newest joint Luvanmusiq is decent and quite possibly better than Soulstar all together. I saw him in concert and he needs a vocal coach or something. It isn't that he sounded horrible, it was just his vocals were pretty off key and it didn't sound like the original. He just needs something new and fresh because he's catching my nerves even though I'm slightly feeling his new record. Check me out and add me on:

i like him on cd, thought he was average at best live, and was underwhelmed by his performance on the ONA It Ain't Over CD.

has a Nice Tone to his Voice, but he is doing the same talk singing in all of his songs..All the songs sounds the same.. Hold some long notes.. sounds like he's just making it up as he goes.. which is alright, but Grows tiresome after a few songs..
Wish he would challenge himself

Ouch. You guys are hard. I think his lyrics and songwriting are pretty damn good. I've never seen him live so I have nothing to go on in that area. Dude's a good songwriter. A lot of straight up CRAP gets praised on this site because people are so wrapped up in theatrics that subtleties are disregarded. I stand by what I said. He writes well. I disagree with those that say otherwise. "Buddy" is low-key and befitting of his personality just like his earlier works. Its not his finest moment, but songs like "Love" and "Teachme" can't be denied. You can't honestly look at his lyrics and call him a weak writer. Dude is a solid lyricist. Maybe because he's not singing that same ol' "I'm sorry baby" B.S. or "I wanna hit it" B.S. that people have become so accustomed to? [Edited 5/15/07 20:48pm]

I really like Musiq, i had gotten his second album, and I like most of it. I think he went too hiphop for me for SoulStar, which is why I haven't copped it but "Who Knows" is the jam. At this point in history, we have a choice to make

You are right. That is exactly how i describe buddy. I will admit that i did like his soulstar cd a lot. I just can't get into the new one. Just not happening. I like the fact that he writes good lyrics but his theme of let's be friends is getting a little old. Don't laugh at my funk

His debut was damn tight. Musiq's problem was his 2nd album sounded a lot like his first one and then so did his 3rd one. He stays too close to his formula and doesn't take many risks. In fact, "Buddy" is basically "Sunny (Just Friends)," his smash first hit back in 2000. Same concept and message basically. Make Afros not War

Have you listened to "Love"? Have you listened to "Teachme"? These songs have key changes, bridges and "Teachme" is in 3/4 time. How in the hell is that 3rd grade? Unless Juliard or Berkley has a 3rd grade now, I highly doubt it. Most of the R&B on the radio and on the charts is 4/4 time, no key changes and no bridges AT ALL. Back up what you are talking about, please. School me if I missed something. I'm primarily talking about this guy's skills as a writer, anyway. He's not a great vocalist by any stretch but neither is Dylan. I'm not one of those people who believes that every song sung needs to be done so with vocal theatrics. Most of the posts are re-enforcing exactly what I'm talking about - a lack of recognition of subtleties. I agree about him repeating himself sometimes as was pointed out but that Musiq's writing is immature claim that so many haters make is bull and doesn't hold any water. I get it. People don't like "Buddy". Fine. I'm not that fond of it either and I don't care much for songs built on top of a sample even when they are well done. Buddy aside, he's written some good songs. I still have yet to see anyone post proof otherwise.[/color]

I bought his first album. I thought it was ok. However, after I saw him live I sort of lost interest in him. He was terrible. He just could not hit the notes and at times was off key. In general I think his songs are cool, but nothing spectacular.
It was the same thing with Bilal, after I saw him live, I just lost interest. His show was a catastrophe. That boy was a hot mess. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...
