The target audience of MTV doesn't buy music anymore, so why should they show it? Then again, if they would show it, maybe they'd start buying music again. Propably not, though. The question how all of this started really is an interesting, albeit very complicating one.

I agree, today's videos are WHACK.No originality at all.Nobody has any fresh ideas. All of the hip-hop videos look the same.

But there was a time when music videos were creative and innovative....a time when videos were a large part of enjoying an artist's music.Admit it,you were at home watching MTV whenever they premiered a new Prince video lol You loved the excitement.I remember in 1989,staying home from work(!) just to catch the world premiere of Prince's "Batdance" video, lol.

It's too bad those days are gone. These days, music videos are boring and uninspired.

Outside of the MJ thriller type video's I have NEVER really liked video. The last video I enjoyed was Usher's Rhythm City and Outcast Hey Ya.

Sure those guys are best seen performing their music live, but they all have strong visual elements.

Videos are a nice document of that style.

Something like Lets Go Crazy captured Prince's energy & performance at a magical moment.

Videos don't have to be separate from performance.

I agree but that is NOT your typical video. Have u watched the so called video's of todays artist? Embarrassing comes 2 mind.

True, but you can say the same thing about the music of most of today's artists. You mentioned liking Outkast's video, it's no surprise that their music also happens to be good.

I don't think there's anything inherantly wrong with videos. Of course the music is more important, and that may be where some of these artists/executives went wrong with their priorities.

I like the idea of music videos....when it's creative and interesting to watch.Today's videos put me to sleep but back in the 80s,artists made some truly outstanding, groundbreaking videos.

VH1 was absolutely great in the 1990s with shows like:

The Big 80s
8 Track Flashback
The Get Down Countdown

They also showed old music reruns...the only flaw was they edited them down to 30 minutes. They showed:

American Bandstand
The Midnight Special
Solid Gold
Don Kirshner's Rock Concert
Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve
Cher

They even had a great documentary show, "Behind The Music"....which was good until they started featuring 1990s artists.
I really liked "Behind The Music". It was one of my favorite shows. Until they did one on..... Britney Spears! (What is it with the women who have "itney" in their names? lol )They lost all credibility with me.
