Mtv what the hell happened

for the past 6-7 year mtv has been basically all about reality shows, they play music when people are usually sleeping like from 1am-7am. remember the old days when mtv which stands for music televison actually was about music.someone needs to talk to the executives because this is nonsense, i wish i could write a letter or something but i don't know how to reach them and it's so complicated.yall remember when an artist was coming out with a new cd they'd play all that artist's videos to welcome in their new viedeo.what happened to mj weekends, prince weekends and madonna weekends, and so on. younger kids these days don't know good music because it's never shown, all they know is rap and next, real world, parental controls and all those other stupid but sometimes entertaining shows.all they really have that some people watch is the top 10 countdown(or something like that lol ).they might as well call mtv rtv(reality tv).i just thought i should share how i feel.

What happened to MTV is sad. What part of MUSIC TELEVISION is hard to figure out?

They created MTV2, which was originally going to play real music and also introduce new acts. Well, that station went almost 100% shit-hop, and did it very quickly.

I don't have MTV2 because it is on a higher priced cable package. However, I figured it would be mostly shit hop.

VH1 has turned into nothing but reality shows just like MTV.....whenever VH1 isn't counting down the top 100 whatevers or showing "I Love the 80s" 50 times a week. Instead of counting down the top 100 videos of the 80s and showing small clips.....make a fucking day of it and show the damn videos in their entirety.

Yeah MTV2 had promise for about a week and then it was gone, now its home to shows like Sucker Free and Pimp my ride reruns. MTV is dead and buried, they play videos at 4 am i think, so if you're an owl you can tune in. Vh1 is no better at this point either, like you said its either a countdown where they dont show the damn video!!! they put some 3rd rate actor or comedian to tell me about the video! shut the fuck up loser and show the video, if i wanted to see you i would go to a comedy club. And if its not a countdown then its the Flavor of this or I love New York part 12.

For me it all ended when these stations STOPPED playing older videos, remember in the later 80's early 90's when you could see the new Mariah Carey video or someone like that but then see a classic Van Halen Video or a Rick James video, and you want to know why kids today grow up with thinking that music didnt exist before they started listening to it, no fucking knowledge at all. I just want some kind of alternative, right now the only thing is the IMF channel which plays videos from all countries and NO FREAKING VJS so thats a plus!

VH1 was absolutely great in the 1990s with shows like:

The Big 80s
8 Track Flashback
The Get Down Countdown

They also showed old music reruns...the only flaw was they edited them down to 30 minutes. They showed:

American Bandstand
The Midnight Special
Solid Gold
Don Kirshner's Rock Concert
Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve
Cher

They even had a great documentary show, "Behind The Music"....which was good until they started featuring 1990s artists.

Exactly! totally agree, Behind the Music was amazing, all my faves from Rick Springfield to all the 70's and 80's bands. But once the Behind the Music Nick Lachey aired that was the end! Behind the Music of Nick Lachey...a producer and a writer who made my career, then Jessica dumped me, so i cried for a day and got a new hot chick...not very important.

MTV lost it soooo many years ago. Then VH-1 went. Just sad.

The Tube is the only channel worth a damn as far as actual music goes now, and half of that is oldies. neutral

The reason they don't play videos anymore is because videos were the lowest rated thing on the channel. That's why you have all of the other shows.

Now, a video channel not playing videos because they want to bring in more viewers and ad revenue.... well, you may ask "what's the point then?" But they're in the business to make money, and for no other reason. They're going to put on the air what puts asses in seats and eyeballs to the screen.

Being a teenager in the 80's and being american, seeing the fall of MTV was an absolute disgrace. disbelief

I kept wandering how TRL could do a countdown when it's virtually impossible for those videos to be seen. I'm assuming it's strictly based on commercial/radio airplay and not the videos themselves.

I've been living in Holland for the past 5 years and let me tell you, MTV over here is what MTV in the states should be!! They play VIDEOS!! eek With the reality show sprinkled in here and there. It's actually a joy (sometimes) to watch it. They show old videos as well.

TMF (the music factory) is another dutch video channel that is also very good at just playing music videos.

I just can't imagine why a VIDEO station would completely STOP showing MUSIC VIDEOS..it's ridiculous.

TRL is based on viewer votes.

MTV is an abomination. I too was a teenager in the 80s and remember how they used to show videos. Now it is brainless hot garbage. Between stupid reality shows, like that horrid three 6 mafia crap, to those boyz doing stunts and vomiting for fun. i don't get it. they need to rename the channel.

VH1 was alright for a moment. One of the best shows they had was the one where they tried to reunite old bands and groups. I really don't understand why they cancelled that show. neutral

Up here, MuchMusic and it's older brother MuchMoreMusic, have gone down the fucking tubes too. And fast! It was only a few short years ago when videos could be seen on both channels regularly throughout the day, and with not-too-shabby a variety, either. Now both have relegated the bulk of what they still play to the wee hours of the morning, and much of it's the same 35 songs or so on repeat. sigh

VH1 was bought out by MTV. so MTV now runs the station and have bene for several years. But VH1 was soo great before they where bought out. They should have never done that!

you and me both...VH1 Soul actually plays real soul music, unlike BET and their crap. What's so funny is VH1 was the first to do a Hip Hop Honors, when BET back in the day used to play hip hop.

The original "music videos" were really just live performances that were just visually recorded.

The concept of the music video is sound - but it's been taken FAR below the bottom-of-the-barrel lately. Shit-hop videos look like they're recorded with personal camcorders.

A good part of MTV's demise is probably the Internet, which is sad too.

using that logic, it's also meant to be heard live as well, so you'd better throw out all of your records and CD's.
