I don't remember anyone here on the org who absolutely hated the Beatles or thought that their music was shit, but I have seen a lot of heated arguments on this forum when some people overly praised them as musical gods. That is worthy of discussion, whether you believe The Beatles are God's gift to popular music or whether you believe Prince could run circles musically around the Beatles.

I don't know, there was some prick on this form a few months ago calling JB a hack that only surrounded himself with talented musicians. He got run out of here pretty quick, I think, but nonetheless...

If someone doesn't like James Brown, they should just stop listening to music all together.

Exactly. Why would you be even on a Prince site mentioning that if you don't like his biggest influence?

All I can think of is Sade and Tears For Fears. I've heard very little to no complaints about them here on in orgland as well as in the outside world. But I can't think of any others. hmmm

not tryong to be rude, but where are they now, there is nothing to compalin about because thet aren't around, if they are are around they must be doing little things in another country

Well Sade may not be around at the moment, but Tears for Fears are still making music. Even though "Everybody Loves a Happy Ending" was about 3 years ago, that's still a fairly recent update of the band. Plus they're still touring too.

Bob Marley is loved all over the world and his music is timeless because he used it to advocate social change-for freedom of mankind, regardless of race, ethnicity, or economic status.

No, I honestly despise them and their music. I've disliked every single one of the 50 or so Beatles songs I've heard. "A Day in the Life" is not in that list if I recall.

Oh yes, me too. I'm not a big Reggae fan at all anyway, but his voice grates on me so much. I find the whole genre very dreary.

Being totally honest here, when someone says they hate the Beatles or Aretha Franklin, I have to wonder what exactly does the person like about music at all?

They're not the end-all, be-all of music. Enjoyment of music is entirely subjective and can be based on many factors. There are qualities in musicians I love that I don't get from The Beatles or Aretha. I'm sure there are qualities that they have that my favorites lack.

That's what I'm talking about though. It makes me think that the person just enjoys being into certain artists, rather than having a love of music itself. shrug

and its not like sade is a has been. whenever she does release a new cd (which is every twenty years, right?) they end up being huge successes.

why do we look at artist who take their time as such a bad thing? give me quality over quantity any and every day.

I'm not a big fan of a lot of 80's music. There are some good songs here and there, but the production style of a lot of it turns me off. That and this whole 80's Flashback resurrgence thing is annoying too.

I do like SOME 80's stuff just not the majority of it. That said, I'm more of a fan of Prince's 90's stuff, but that's a whole other thread!

I hate 80's music too. Not all of it, of course, but I wasn't a fan then, and I'm not a fan now. It was too pop & superficial for the most part. Just like the '00's have been so far.

I heard s lot of that music growing up which is why I don't really need to hear it again. It's funny because the whole 80's rehash seems to be affecting the music in this decade. A lot of the music is kinda vapid and soulless which reflects the business too. I'd never really thought about it until I read your post NDRU!

yeah, I guess it started in the late 90's but Back Street Boys, Britney, Justin, Beyonce, all remind me of 80's "artists"

It's not exactly the same, we've added hip hop to the uber-superficial pop market (where it was more underground before)

Maybe the 2010's will be great!
