Robert Randolph and "Stardom"

I'm curious as to why Robert Randolph hasnt caught on yet. There was a HUGE buzz around him when he WRECKED the Grammy's a few years back. Then he released the ultra slick CD "Colorblind". Then, 2 of the songs "Aint Nothing Wrong With That" and "The Thrill Of It" started being played during sport shows and on tv commercials endlessly, yet radio play and record sales eldue him.
Why?

He's phenomenal with a fabulous band. He's just not the type of act that you'll see on the videos much. Which ain't a bad thang. . . I bet his live show is killer.

in the last few months (don't remember exactly when or how long) i was seeing a video of his in fairly heavy rotation on VH1 (at 3 in the morning, but that's when they play them).

I've wondered the same thing. I've seen him a few times in concert and I LOVE him! I am completely amazed at his talent and tell everyone about him- a lot of people haven't heard of Robert Randolph! disbelief

He's my cousin's (by marriage) cousin. Basically, he's doing the same thing we always did in church. Cats from church really get a kick out of people acting like its new music.

Yeah, I had a friend who always tries to act like he's "been there, done that" hit me with "Glad U finally discovered him". confused

I don't care. He's got crazy talent! guitar
It's so refreshing, since everything on the radio seems trashy and the same. He's not oiling up his chest and humping the floor/air, or letting some talentless hack remix synth beats for him... no no no!

Yeah he's good for music but not for business he understands this much. I would say if people want to keep hearing "crazy refreshing talent", there are churches playing what Robert Randolph is doing erry Sunday.

I saw him New Years Eve... What kind of church do U attend?! eek
When I go to church, I'm there to receive a blessing. pray
When I go to a concert, I'm there to jam. I don't necessarily need them to mix... confused

So I'm not sure I get your point. I'm impressed with MUSICIANS- not synth-technicians and poster boys. I hate that "shit-hop" expression that Vainandy uses, but I do agree that most of today's music is empty and useless, if not recycled. RR is a MUSICIAN. What he does in the business is not my business.

Tell me something... what the hell r u talking about? My point was there a real musicians in church ( I attend a Pentacostal church) doing the same thing RR is doing. You do realize that's where he got his start don't you. Honey, when the "music" he is doing is mentioned to him, he laughs at the response he gets from some of his listeners because he knows he's doing the same thing (although somewhat watered down) he was brought up doing in church but people think its something new... Like I said before, it is funny to see people like RR cross over into secular music and watch people get all excited at the stuff I've been hearing for years in just about every church I've attended. Need more examples? D'Angelo, Tony Tone Toni, Angie Stone, Sam Cooke, Bobby Womack, Marvin Gaye etc. all these people honed their skills in church. Don't get me wrong it is good music nonetheless but I remember being at a family gathering and overhearing how RR gets a real kick out of people's reaction to his music like its something brand new.
