Robbery by Teena Marie

First off i'm dissapointed in you orgers for not schooling me on this album. I just bought it last year and the shit is smokin! What a great r&b new wavish album by lady T! I love the songs, Robbery, Midnight Magnet, well basically all the faster jamz on it. I can do without of the slow jazzy stuff. Otherwise it's great album. Teena Marie rocks!

[b]I love Teena Marie! I wasn't really that into her when she was really popular in the 80's but NOW I really like her and appreciate all of her music. This one, ROBBERY, is a good one. It's her pop/rock side at it's best.

Everytime we discuss Teena Marie,I always mention this album! lol I'm always surprised that it doesn't get more love from the Teena fans here.I think it's one of her most consistent albums. For me,the highlight is the exotic,Latin-flavored slow jam "Stop The World",which is effectively lush and colorful.LOVE THIS SONG! It was the third single from the album."Fix It,Baby" is classic uptempo Teena...funky and vibrant! "Midnight Magnet" boasts a funky groove, too."Shadow Boxing" is another good song.

Yes,"Midnight Magnet" was a hit.It was the second single from the album.Jill Jones sings backup vocals on this one headbang

thought you said you love me....midnight magnet
thought you said you love me...midnight magnet

The three singles were "Fix It Baby","Midnight Magnet" and "Stop The World".Although the title track never became a single,a video was filmed for it.

Actually I just bought this last weekend and I'm digging it. nod I thought it would sound a bit dated, but the slow songs hold up nicely. And yes, "Midnight Magnet" is the shizzle! thumbs up!

No shit, Soul. This album is never not mentioned when discussing Teena. I ran a thread on just the album cover alone. I'll hip those who don't know to the little cryptic message that's on the album cover. Read the telephone number that's on the piece of paper. It's The Time's song "777-9311". That was Teena's little shout out to Prince and The Time.

i didn't notice that. i will have to look at the cover again. one thing though, that's a funny fact because i listened to the time's "what tiem is it" this morning on the way to work and then played "robbery" afterwards. they have similar vibes/sounds. 2 great funky new wave albums!

Midnight interaction on the telephone
You called me up to tell me that you were alone
Talking bout the powers that could set me free
I rushed right over with my new found energy
The knock on the door seemed unfamiliar to you
Do i detect a suprise or two ?
You said something came up and i would have to go
I looked over your shoulder it's a girl i know
headbang

I was disappointed with it because it didn't have that Rick James/Stone City Band sound. Teena's stuff after she left Motown was OK but it wasn't nearly as strong as when she was with Rick James.

I agree. She made her best records at Motown.I think Rick James was a major influence on her.Albums like 'Irons In The Fire'(1980) and 'It Must Be Magic' (1981) are sensational.Out of all her Epic albums,'Robbery' comes the closest to her Motown albums, imo.

My favorite is her first album "Wild and Peaceful". It was great from start to finish with songs like:

Deja Vu (I've Been Here Before)
Don't Look Back
I'm Just A Sucker For Your Love
I Can't Love Any More
Turning Me On

I'll have to get that album. I remember seeing the video to "Robbery" years ago. But I must admit I didn't like that song. It sounds like there may be some other good songs on the album though.
