Do the paths intersect at times, yes, I believe, does it define? No.
When you break it down, it's all subjective.
"Labels" are limited.

I love Beatles as much as Funkadelic and feel their psychedelica and lyrical themes had a tremendous influence on funk bands (not talking the commercial dancefloor genre). Occasionally they found a groove, but they are only to be considered funky as far you consider Little Richard or Chuck Berry. If those two pre-James Brown icons are funk then it's all funky over here (cuz over there ain't shit!).
