Let me add my 2 cents to this thread....

I have to say that it seems from my POV that ALOT of the people on this thread don't know much about Sananda/TTD....(not EVERYONE, but alot)....I'm a big fan of Sananda AND I dig Prince as well...

WHY DO PEOPLE ALWAYS HAVE TO COMPARE SANANDA TO PRINCE????? THEY ARE EXTREMELY DIFFERENT!!!!!

I think a lot of people see that they are both black, many times they both play all the instruments on their songs, and they both play many different styles...

But really Sananda's music doesn't sound ANYTHING at all like Prince. Yes Sananda is influenced by Prince as are many artist, but when I listen to Sananda, there are other artist whose influence seem way more apparent to my ears....particularly The Rolling Stones and Stevie Wonder....but Prince???? Not really...again, I'm sure Prince is an influence, but some of you guys are saying that Sananda copied Prince's style or that he was supposed to be the next Prince (says who???) and I think all of that is uninformed people being ig'nant! Have you guys really listen to most of his work or just made a quick judgement based on your preconceived notion of a black man doing rock so he must be trying to be Prince and there's only one Prince so obviously this guy is a failure cuz he can't be who he's not!

If you dig Prince, that's cool, if you dig Sananda, that's cool too, but please, they are completely different artist and for the most part their music sounds completely different from each other....

And how in the hell can you say they look alike? What are you smoking? Prince is like 5 feet tall, Sananda I believe is around 6 feet tall, I think he's even a little bit taller than that....Has Prince ever sported dreads or blonde hair???? Nope! The comparisons I've read on some of these posts are just ridiculous and uninformed...I'm not trying to be rude but I think you should do a little research before you just write someone off with some wrong info.

I shall get off my soapbox now razz

Edit: Now that I look back, it seems a lot of the posts I'm referring to were from when this thread was on the Prince forum and not on the "Music:Non Prince" forum.....figures (lol)!

The industry basically put an end to superstars. It was more because of Prince...and MJ...and George Micheal...and Whitney that there are no "next fill-in-the-blanks" anymore. Contract conflicts.

That's an excellent point that I hadn't really thought of....you're right there are no more superstars...it can't be cuz the talent isn't out there, it's just the money isn't being put behind it.

BK's point is excellent, actually. Mid-90s Prince, Madonna and MJ had evolved from multi-platinum aritists to poster children for inflated contracts. At a time when sales were quickly shrinking (check the RIAA's activities since then), the industry bigwigs took notes about the perils of creating too many superstars.

Another casualty of the digital age. Excellent point, BK.

Oh, and on topic:

Two incredibly gifted artists.

Personally, though I like Prince's voice, I believe TTD can sing circles around him.

Pelt me. I dare ya.

The very thought of someone saying that so-and-so could be the next Prince makes me sick.

There's only one man of Pop Royalty worthy enough to be known as Prince, that's the way it's always going to be.
And besides, why would you want somebody to be "the next Prince"?
That's like saying that Prince isn't good enough for you anymore and you're looking for the next best thing. cry that thought breaks my heart.

There are superstars still, just not really talented ones. More like figureheads through which money is channeled.

For years now, I have referred to them as disposeable stars. Mariah was the last megastar. Beyoncé is the first since her.
For the most part, they have been people like Boys II Men and so on. When they are gone, the public could care less.

right, I know what you're saying about disposable. I think Justin T is a superstar, making hit records & movies & on every magazine cover, but I think you're right about his forgetability. He truly means nothing, he just fills a place in the entertainment business at the moment. I would probably say Eminem was one, too, and had some actual talent, if not much substance.

These muhtha luvers on here will rationalize Barry White is a Prince copycat; you know Sananda is gonna get it. Its the kiss of death to Prince fanatics to admit Prince as an influence if you're a musician.

For a couple of seconds, I was wondering what the hell "SYNAMY" was. The song is just "Sign Your Name." There's no need to lengthen one of his (relatively) short song titles. lol

Still, I love TTD!

Oh yes,he was labelled as the next Prince-MJ.
Like Electricblue said:those wre the years evry record company wanted their Prince and MJ.

TTD however was very talented,2 bad he released Neither fish nor flesh
so soon in his career..he lost a lot of fans there.
Symphony or damn would have been a better follow up 2 his debut.

He lost me with Vibrator...but I still love his first 3 albums.

I wouldn't go as far as 'sing circles around him' (I think Prince's voice is very versatile) but there are few who can sing like TTD.

Nikka Costa

perhaps in the r'n'b field. there are lots of megastars in the hip-hop scene. my teacher and inspiration, Tupac, for example (I'm part of his crew, Tha Havenotz, with Shock G/Humpty Hump, Candyman 187, Fatal Hussein and other folks.)

Eminem can be considered a megastar as well.
