He was one of the great songwriters of his generation. I was listening to "I Can't Write Left Handed" one Sunday morning as I was reading the papers about the debate over the surge. One of the greatest live albums EVER (in my opinion) is Tom Waits' "Nighthawks At The Diner." Tom plays MC, comedian, and poet, as well as songwriter on it, and introduced new songs in front of a live audience.
