Five Star have been discussed many times here. I had their first album way back when which was nice. I've been meaning to get a comp for the longest time.

Five Star are very talented. I have all their albums and I met them backstage when they were doing a concert in London. Let me tell you, they are very down-to-earth,generous,and kind. They do not mind if you ask them for an autograph or take pictures of them.I am so glad to have met them.

I have their Silk and Steel album on vinyl- I listened to that album all the time when it came out in 86.

I also have an import of their greatest hits.

I can understand in away why people compare groups like Five Star to the J5, i.e being a black, family group and all, but that is really where the comparison ends. When the J5 first came out they were more like mini hippies with their mixture of bubblegum soul and more deep soul(They were so utterly different from anything then and since). The only reason why Michael wasn't put up their as a singer with the likes of Marvin Gaye and co was because he was just too young.

It was probably mor ebecause the girls looked and sounded a lot like Janet. I partly believe that Janet's lack of success in the UK was beacuse Five Star came along right before Control and they sounded so similar.

Actually, didn't their dad used to play in the same band as Joseph Jackson aswell? Probably not, he was a session musician with The Falcons and toured with Wilson Pickett, but Joseph Jackson was probably just in a different band called The Falcons lol

I couldn't believe these threads in the past pitting 5 Star against New Edition. And these debates were pretty intense too. But my money was on New Edition. But it wasn't because I'm the bigger fan, but also because 5 Star's music is kinda dated now and a bit derivative of what was popular at that time (namely, The Jacksons). Also, New Edition had better songwriters and producers and managed to have staying power even today. From a historical perspective, I'd say that New Edition is more important and influential. Would there be a New Kids, or Backstreet Boys, or N*Sync without them? wink

I dunno, New Edition were pretty much one hit wonders to me. I think I know about 3 of their songs and wouldn't have ever realised they were huge in the US if Bobby Brown hadn't become a solo star.

No, they weren't one hit wonders either. They must've had at least 5 or 6 hits: "Candy Girl", "Cool it Now", "Mr. Telephone Man", "Count Me Out", "If It Isn't Love", "Can You Stand The Rain", "Hit Me Off", etc. And they're still around too. They haven't faded into obscurity or became a nostalgia act like 5 Star did.

New Edition were obviously much bigger in the US than the UK, that's why there is such a great respect for them in America.

Seriously, I only know of Candy Girl and Mr. Telephone Man. There are loads of US acts that were huge there but absolutely nothing outside. Jody Watley is another one I only first discovered on the internet through chatting to Americans biggrin Obviously I knew Shalamar, but never knew she went solo.

"All Fall Down" pops up so often on my Sirius (I have this function where I can have songs I like send me a message when they were playing an I have the radio on), you'd think it was "When Doves Cry"! Both the Eighties to now R&B station and the disco/classic dance station play it a lot.

talk about a throwback. i remember them, they had a little buzz on them. i was somewhat fascinated by a black, british family group. wonder how the sisters have aged. i thought one of the brothas was a little sweet, not surprised to hear he wears makeup
