Pink Floyd Going thru a huge Pink Floyd phase right now. Come on fans... let's talk Pink.
Favorite album? What do you think of Animals? The Final Cut? Meddle? Momentary Lapse of REason? David and Roger's solo albums? Right now I'm digging "Obscured by Clouds"... never gave it much thought before. It's underrated.

The first Floyd album I'd heard start to finish was The Final Cut...so I'm partial to Roger.
I was lucky in '87 to see, within a few months of each other, Pink Floyd at the Kingdome in Seattle & Roger Water's Radio KAOS show at the much tinier Mercer Arena. It was an interesting contrast. Though KAOS was another half-baked concept album, the show was incredible and memorable. I tend to remember more of the theatrics from the Floyd show (the flying bed, the inflated pig). What I loved about Pink Floyd, growing up, was how faceless they were. So much awesome music, so many cool trippy images...but I never knew who was behind the music. I had this impression they were in hiding! My only low point with this band was bringing home my copy of 'Momentary Lapse of Reason' & seeing the picture of Mason & Gilmore in suits, smiling, inside the CD booklet. For some odd reason, that signalled for me what the band was leaving behind. "I got the devil in me, girl." - 'John the Baptist', Afghan Whigs

I like Roger, but he took Pink Floyd along in a direction I didn't particularly care for with much of The Wall and The Final Cut - and with his solo albums. I mean, how many words can you fit into the song? He never really had the gift of melody, and needed David as his foil. Their best work, for me, was Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and Animals - albums that showed a real collaboration between the two. (Although, even with Animals, Roger was really starting to take over to a large degree.)

Animals seems very underrated, also Meddle. Never heard the Final Cut, but I'd like to. Floyd seems a bit empty without Waters now.
Anyone notice Andrew Lloyd Webber ripped off the last track of Meddle for Phantom of the Opera? I still love pink Floyd, even if it's grown a bit cliche to get high in your dorm room and blast Wish You Were Here. I think it's really impressive that they recovered from losing their lead songwriter, singer & guitarist and went on to greater success both critically (arguably) & commercially than ever before. Roger sure did: We cower in our shelters With our hands over our ears Lloyd-Webber's awful stuff Runs for years and years and years An earthquake hits the theater But the operetta lingers Then the piano lid comes down And breaks his fucking fingers Le prego di non toccare la macchina per favore!

I totally agree. Roger has a tendency to write lyrics that read like lists of things. Mother, If, Eclipse, What God Wants, Dogs...not that he isn't good at it, it's just a little quirky. He really left the band at a strange time...I think the Wall & Final Cut, being as (auto)biographical as they were, added a new creative dimension to the band. It just seemed that after he left his mark, Pink Floyd was trying too consciously to sound like what people expected Floyd to sound like... After Roger left, it was almost as if the others got together and said, "OK, let's make a 'Pink Floyd' album", rather than just let the songs come. It seemed very calculated and not very genuine. That being said, there are quite a few songs on both A Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell that I enjoy... but it's like if the Beatles ever recorded without John Lennon. Something essential is missing.

Hard to choose, they had several great ones. I recall playing the heck out of The Wall, Dark Side, and Ummagumma...on vinyl back in the day! Did you see the recent Floyd article in Rolling Stone? While I can't get into any of the Sid music, the rest of it is on another level IMO. Nobody has captured emotion and regret in a musical form like this band, I own it all and find it impossible to pick a favorite. Ego's aside, Gilmour/Waters were something that's yet to be reached in song writing to me.

I'm one of those rare Floyd fans who loves the post-Waters period as much as anything else they've done. I think the Division Bell is great all the way through. Gilmour, imo, is one of the best guitarists ever and I love his voice.
I've seen them twice live, post-Waters, and am looking forward to seeing him for the first time at Live Earth in July. Have you heard his new single- Hello, I Love You- from the movie, The Last Mimzy? I LOVE it. (I started a thread about it when I first heard it and no one replied. I didn't think there were any other Floyd fans around here). IMO, it sounds like it could have been a Wall outtake. When I first heard it, I thought they had secretly reunited or something, as I don't really keep up with Waters news and wasn't expecting it. It sounds much more like "Floyd" than Roger on his own. Ask where they're going, they'll tell U – "Nowhere"
They've taken a lifetime lease on Paisley Park ...

I liked a lot of the division bell, but I don't listnen to it anywhere near as much as I do Amused to Death or The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking. I don't think Floyd without Waters was a bad band though, they just wern't Floyd with Waters Le prego di non toccare la macchina per favore!
