i think as long as the melody and lyrics are different and the music is in a different key, it's ok. oasis swiped the piano line from imagine to open "dont look back in anger" and didn't have to credit. just like madonna using "can you feel it" for her song "sorry." it's different enough to not have to credit MJ.

How can anyone honestly say these songs are similar? Totally different production concepts. AM's cut is built around that ill rhythm guitar, the very warm spare analog live feel of the snare drum and most of all AM singing her ass off as she has never done before or since. That record was one for the ages, is totally unique, and would have been VERY obvious if someone was ripping it off. Now, I can understand if somone was inspired rhythmically be the AM cut, and started out with that rhythmic idea when they were constructing the MC song. Sure, I'll by that. The same way Miles heard some shit Bird did and got an idea for his own shit. Not that we are talking Bird and Miles here, but you get the anology. Personally, this is one of the MC records that I love -back when she she did what she did best - what the fuck she was told to. I love both these cuts. I wish this Mariah had never gone off the deep end and tried to prove herself to the hip-hop crowd. She really was something in the early 90s.
