By chance..finding a CLASSIC!

Have you ever taken a chance on an unfamiliar CD or artist and LOVE the album/artist.

Give examples/story

Here's mine:
I go to Borders Bookstore to purchase the majority of my music. Last year, I noticed this CD there that intrigued me. The cover was so haunting and everytime I would go to buy something, I would see the CD sitting there with that haunting cover. Finally, I picked up the CD and read some of the quotes on the artist. I had never heard of the artist and that was weird because, tho I dont know it ALL musically, I consider myself well versed. I noticed that the artist was older too. On the cover of the CD, Bonnie Raitt gave some positive comments on it and I thought to myself, "if Bonnie says something is good, its good" LOL!

So the next day, I went on allmusic.com and researched the artist/album and the artist seemed so interesting. So I went and picked up the CD and it turned out to be a GEM!
The cd was titled: "I've Got My Own Hell To Raise" by Bettye Lavette biggrin

give your stories of discovery neverbeforeknown artists/albums... biggrin

The last unknown artist was Thicke - his first CD is awesome. I had only heard one song on a TV commercial (the one that samples Beethoven).

I love that CD, but I don't really like his new sound.

The other would be Damien Rice - his first CD blew me away. His second CD annoyed me though, as if he really "bought his own press" as they say.

His song "I'ma be alright" was also featured in either a Gateway or Compaq laptop commercial.

i happened across a free download of betty davis's "don't call her no tramp" on a web site a few months ago, and became obsessed with the song, which led me to hunt down her greatest hits album. i was FLOORED by the whole thing, and couldn't believe in all this time of being alive, i'd never heard of her. ever since then, she's become a fast favorite of mine. bow

Gods Child- "Everybody". I heard part of the title track at a club- and I rarely went to clubs. Bought the album knowing nothing, and love it to this day.

The Dan Reed Network. I don't recall how I came across them, but I love their album, esp. side one. I just pulled that cassette out recently, been meaning to see if I can find it on CD. I've considered starting a thread to see if anyone remembers these guys. Anyone??

so, anyway, in my collection- these 2 are "unusual" classics for me.
Ask where they're going, they'll tell U – "Nowhere"
They've taken a lifetime lease on Paisley Park ...music

Last artist I did that with was Laura Nyro

I read an article on her in Record Collector magazine and picked up Time and Love:- The Essential Masters.

Was hooked from the opening bars of 'Sweet Blindness' and what a voice!!
if you've gotta pay for things that you've done wrong I've gotta big bill coming at the end of the day- Gil Scott Heron

I used to take chances all the time in the 1980s. Back then, I knew from experience that some of the hardest and baddest jams were on 12 Inch singles. I bought many a 12 Inch without ever hearing it first and, most of the time, it turned out to be a jam.

I stopped taking chances in the early 1990s because everything I took a chance on ended up being a bunch of bullshit and I ended up throwing it away.

Pffft. I've hardly heard any of the music by the artists whose records I buy, unless I already have some of their previous records.

Why sure. The type of music that I favour is mostly done by artists who love making the music themselves, they're not going to make any serious money out of it. So if a record is released on a label whose output profile I've learnt to appreciate, and the description of the record sounds interesting, there really is never any danger buying such things.
