Alexander O'Neal fan appreciation thread

He was Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis' contribution to the man's man romantic singer in the mode of Teddy Pendergrass, Otis Redding and Al Green. The former lead singer for Flyte Tyme (before the group became The Time), Alexander O'Neal had a solid career that was derailed by his drug use. To this day, I enjoy songs from his self-titled debut album, "Hearsay," All True Man" and "Love Makes No Sense."

I love how all of a sudden he wakes up with his eyes all watery and shit,,,and that facial disbelief lol

Love that song though,,,,,but boy the video is the wackest period.

Alexander O'Neal is a classic. He's a great singer. I love his music. Prince was not the only one from Uptown with great music. He made a name for himself. He's a great artist.

I liked Alexander. Too bad his career didn't go further. Oh well! Some have it and some don't and some just misuse it.
Peace and be wild!

Glad to see that Fake made your list.wink
I don't think this tune gets enough credit for being as funky as it is.

Can I get some nasty bass?
Mmm, it's gonna be kinda right tonight.

Of course, "Fake" was going to make the cut. It was Alexander O'Neal's only No. 1 single. I would add the extended version where the "nasty bass" part is longer and Alex is going off on the woman a little longer near the end.

I loved Jam & Lewis' use of Lisa Keith as bg singer. She has an angelic voice. That's her on Criticize, and Used - to name a couple.
We all want the stuff that's found in our wildest dreams.

no no no! You left out "Aphrodisia"! I know it wasn't a big hit, but it has one of my all-time favorite lines:

You don't have to wait no longer
'Cause the love doctor's here
I got the stuff to make you holler
So let me be your superniiiiigga

falloff That part has never ceased to crack me up!

I prefer the heaviness of the original "Criticize" over the remixed single version. That's my favorite by him.

He was their absolute worst production of the 1980s. I bought the first album because I loved "Innocent". That was a disappointment. "Innocent" was the only good thing on the album. When I heard "Fake", which I love, I didn't make the mistake of buying that album. I waited around to hear some more songs on the radio. Then I started hearing one boring slow song after another so I knew I had made the right decision. lol

The only stuff I like from him is "Innocent", "Fake", and "Sleigh Ride".

I love Alexander O'Neal fans!
I got one for Christmas a couple of years ago.

"Aphrodisia" was on the "Love Makes No Sense" album. I remember that line -- it and some of Alexander O'Neal vocal phrasing reminded me of something the latter-day Marvin Gaye would have said.

That's interesting, because every single from Alexander O'Neal's "Hearsay" album was uptempo -- "Fake," "Criticize" and "Never Knew Love Like This."

As for the self-titled debut, it was half uptempo and half slow (Monte Moir is the one who produced "If You Were Here Tonight," "Do You Wanna Like I Do" and "Look at Us Now"). My personal favorite uptempo song was "What's Missing."

You are straight trippin! confused That album is the FIRE!! While I agree that "Innocent" is the best song (especially the Alex 9000 part where they broke it all...the...way.....down, that synth solo was kickin) on the album, there was some serious jammin going on with "What's Missing" and "You Were Meant to Be Lady (Not My Girl). He was breaking it down and injecting some of that Church soul at the same time!! I also think that "A Broken Heart Can Mend and "Look at Us Now Are totally underrated. His voice just teems and quivers with emotions on these songs and they always hits me in the heart.

I rememeber not being impressed with Hearsay on first listen, but now I love it. Again, I agree that fake is the jam (but how could it NOT be?) But there;s a lot to be said for the depth of songs like "Hearsay" and "The Lovers," and especially Criticize. I also really love "(What Can I Say) to Make You Love Me." The skits on the album bring it all together and it;s a cool party-type album.

Come on, maybe it's time to give these two albums another spin! wink
