saw her video. i really like the music, but it seems to me she's doing everything she can with her voice to obscure the melody or likeability of the song.
s'all i know of her so far, except that she binges "I don't need your forgiveness, cos I've been saved by Jesus, so fuck you."

Amy reminds me alot of Fiona Apple, not musically really, just she seems like a ticking time bomb, she already cancelled some shows out in LA which is very "Fiona-ish", Fiona actually pulled that crap here in NYC awhile back, she got into her show played 3 songs and said "Fuck, icant do this, the sound sucks" and left the stage and didnt come back and since the show started no refunds were issued. Hopefully Amy is not falling into the mold but i already see it happening.
Is it the artists fault or the record companies? it's the artists' fault if they can't get their shit together and not cancel shows after a temper tantrum or a weekend bender. "I don't need your forgiveness, cos I've been saved by Jesus, so fuck you."

I think I was the same, didn't wanna like her just b/c of all the hype. But I'm also learning to be less judgemental & just LISTEN - all the fuss I made about Van Hunt & I fucking LOVE him now So I need to be more open, don't let the hype turn me off before I check it out for myself... & I was curious on the first listen But I will NEVER give in to any Britney hype!! OH LAWD, please no Britney!!! You know what,CS? I think you might be able to get down w/ this chic. She's young, but unabashedly writes & sings 'Grown-Folks Music' like an old soul. I saw her live during a promotional thing and this chile delivers. She may be a drunk fast-tailed heffa, but she delivers. Its crazy, its like there's a reincarnation of somebody's crazy, drunk ass bluesed-out Auntie trapped inside her body just fighting to get out, manifesting itself through her notorious (and admitted) 'self-medication', and lyrics like: " no I'm not ashamed, but the guilt will kill you...if she don't first" -(to an attached lover) "He walks away, the sun goes down, He takes the day...but I'm GROWN"-( about a break up) "Ain't nothin you can teach me that I can't learn from Mr.Hathaway *as in Donnie* "-(about her drankin' scandals). I had her first cd, and always felt lukewarm with it. Winehouse is a fantastic jazz stylist, but the production on the first cd was yuchy. Tis cd, everything is spot on technically and vocally. and primarily I like the music on B.T.B. because it reminds me of my folks' generation. Think house parties, sitting on your auntie or your granny's lap, the smell of gin & kool's menthol cigarettes, loud ass husband & wives/lovers screamin' & arguing at each other loud enough that the whole street can hear, the one drunk relative that shows up at any and everybody's family reunion, being in your folks car before FM radio was popular and we had to roll windows down manually, drive in movies, gambling halls, cheating men, cheating women, all that shit that reminds you of a love story gone wrong from a Toni Morrison or Gloria Naylor novel or an except of Angelou's 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings'. Take all that, some modern pop culture references and musically throw in a lil reggae, an homage to Motown, Dinah Washington, the Ronnettes, Phil Spector, maybe the Marvellettes, and BAM! You got Winehouse's Back to Black. Start with 'Just Friends', 'Tears dry On Their Own' 'He Can Only Hold Her', 'Love Is A Losing Game', those are choice cuts oh, and check out ole cryin drunkey monkey with her nappy beehive here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=4L9-AvjsB6g Poor lil Joss Stone... Yup. You nailed it, right there. It's a pretty pretentious gimmick she's working. It's like she's fixated on the idea of the boozy blues/jazz songstress rather than just expressing something about who she actually is, what her heritage is, etc. Also, her melodies are naff [Edited 3/28/07 20:48pm]

If that's what she was into at the time she wrote this record, then so be it. In addition, sometimes I think we get a little too compartmentalized and label happy 'round here: why do the accusations have to start that the child is fixated with an 'idea' of being a boozy blues/jazz songstress? In terms of who she is, she is a lush and an admitted manic depressive who won't take meds, and a hell of a song stylist. Have you ever heard Winehouse do standards? She IS a jazz songstress, she can tear up classics like Tenderly or Moody's Mood For Love better than most internationally distributed jazz singers I know even a little older than she, her phrashing is SICK. Cursing and tough motor-jacket posturing aside, through both her writing and live performances she has the ability to convey universal themes like loss, hard living, or anguished love with a frailty, a sensitivity and authenticity unparralled by any of her peers currently out there. And the last time I checked, in terms of her music's thematic content, 'PAIN' knows no color or cultural boundary, so I don't understandnd why "what her heritage is" should even come into play here. *sleepy grammar edit* [Edited 3/29/07 1:50am]

I guess my bottom line is I don't agree with you at all about her phrasing, which I find sick in the opposite way. It wears its pain like a badge, which is not what I look for in art, with her or Thom Yorke or even Nina Simone at her worst. (gonna get creamed for that one, I'm sure... )

I really like her voice, because it reminds me of Lauryn Hill. Her songs have a great vibe too. The only thing I wish she'd do is actually get her butt to rehab! After watching a drunken trainwreck of a duet with Charlotte Church, I'm thinking she needs some help. It would be a shame to see all that talent go to waste.
Still, she's a great new artist, and I'd love to hear more from her. [Edited 3/29/07 12:03pm] Wanna hear me sing? www.ChampagneHoneybee.com

Got both CDs- both are great, in love with the 2nd. Got my parents into her! LOVE love LOVE HER!!!!! My baby (dog) Buddy likes her too- I sing "Rehab" to him but changed the lyrics: "They tired to lock in the bathroom, I said 'no, no, no' Yes I've been bad when you come back toilet paper's unrolled, rolled, rolled I ain't got the time and if my daddy thinks I'm fine He's tried to lock me in the bathroom, I won't go go go" Socks still got butt like a leather seat...
