Can someone please tell me why these songs are so popular?

As a teacher, I try to stay up on what my students are listening to, but it baffles me why these two songs are so popular. I have listened to them both, read the lyrics and watched the videos and I still don't get it. The kids can't explain why they like them either.

Someone please break it down for me.

They are popular because they are Ringtones which is what Rap has been reduced to these days, just like how america likes everything in a soundbyte, music is no different than that. Its dumb, uneducated lyrics, with a beat made in a studio for a 12 year olds cell phone. I hope Mims and RichBoy havent quit their day jobs yet because someone else is coming down the assembly line to replace their ringtone.

That Mims song is absolutely atrocious. Almost as bad as "Chain Hang Low". Haven't heard Rich Boy.

MIMs is fucking garbage, and I'm a hip-hop fan for the most part.


To me, hip-hop is supposed to be the voice of the voiceless.....yet the voiceless want to talk about why they're hot. garbage.

I am actually a composition teacher , so that is why I printed the lyrics to try to understand these songs. I know what they are about, so I am not lost there. However, I honestly cannot put into words what I thought when I read the lyrics. However, stuff like does help me understand why my students struggle to pen engaging essays. They don't read, they watch crap TV and listen to uninspiring stuff like this all day long. It's sad, because it's such a fight to get these kids to tap into their innate creativity. Then again, why would they be motivated to actually put their minds to use when they see junk like this selling millions - ringtones or CDs/downloads. It's sad.

At 32, I guess I really am a dinosaur, because I don't get it.

You might just want to listen to "I Call Your Name" by Switch because that is where they got the sample for "Throw some D's..." It's not an instrumental, but it's a great song. I was actually horrified that such a beautiful song was used on a track like that. Then again, that's just me. Maybe I am a geezer.

I think the MIMS songis popular because the lyrics are easy to remember.

First of all, I'm age 32 and & I know good and well that I'm not old. But I'm a little wiser and a lot more experience about my music history than most of these bubblegum brats (ages 25 and under) that want to tell us that we don't understand how/why the game has change in the music industry. And nevermind that these same brats are listening to artists (especially rappers of their generation) that are sampling/beatbiting 1970's & 1980's music (of our OLDer generation) because they want to sound like us....but can't make the time to learn how to play a freaking instrument so they can make original tracks from the ground up!!!

I agree, I was actually being sarcastic when I referred to myself as a dinosaur. I have a vast knowledge of music, I play bass and piano, and I have diverse listening tastes. I think that is really why I am at a loss to understand the popularity of these two songs. Coming from where we both do musically, it is hard to envision "songs" like this topping any charts - ringtones or not.

I'm 34 and don't get why either of these songs are big now. I have tried to comprehend why teens and young adults like this crap. The lyrics are minimal and the beat is simple.

I really believe these songs are big because someone is getting paid to play this crap.

I agree. This has got to be a case of payola. No one with a shred of sanity would listen to "This is Why I'm Hawt, Paris" more than once.
