Now im not gonna get into defending Joss's talent again, because if you like her, cool, if you dont, turn the page. But the bigger issue that seems to bother me is this whole "faker" "wannabe" labeling going round conerning Joss. And Yet someone like Robin Thicke is held up like the Fucking messiah of soul, now not knocking him, but cut me a break with this guy already he is not even worthy of a quarter of the praise he is getting, the press is kinder to him for many reasons, one, he is a male, and two, he looks the part, case closed. But what does strike me when i see the blasting of Joss and others with talent and at least respect for the music that was before them, is how we do pick on those with talent and let others slip by un marked. The other day i saw this interview with Norah Jones talking about music that she grew up on, and i guarantee if you quizzed todays POP stars like a Justin on the artists she mentioned he wouldnt know one of them, theres alot to be said of those who respect what was before them and some just do that.
Justin is a fake, Robin isn't. Have you seen an interviews with Robin talking about the music he grew up on? His music reflects that and he is not a fake like Justin. Joss is a fake, Norah isn't. There is not a double standard when it comes to fakeness.

Dissing an entire genre? How clueless can you be? Soul; a collection of licks? By that logic, all structured music could be categorized as such. Rock especially. So, let me get this straight. Being white, young and British has in no way helped her career? If that were true, it would be a freakin' FIRST! Interesting, since the record label used those very qualities to sell her in the first place. It never ceases to amaze me how whenever a young white girl sings like an old black woman, she gets pushed miles ahead of young black girls that sing the exact same way or better. But hey, I guess that's not good enough. Nope. I guess some feel she needs to be declared "world's best vocalist" or some shit just because she can carry a tune in a soulful manner? Joss is a DECENT singer but by "soul" standards, she is far less fascinating to people who know the genre well. Its not a matter of people not giving her props; its a matter of real soul/gospel/R&B fans having have heard a lot BETTER than her. She is fascinating to a POP audience who has had less exposure to real soul singing. I just heard her again on Letterman tonight. She's OKAY. Decent. It has a lot less to do with her skin color and much more to do with her skill level. [Edited 3/20/07 0:51am]

[Edited 3/19/07 17:41pm] Whether you like it or not, urban is code for black here in the US...urban music, urban clothes, urban youth...all code for black people. Black people are supposedly highly concentrated in urban cities here. Just like when the word suburban is used in the media, it's understood that they are talking about white people. Anywho, soul music is rooted in black culture, that's why people associate it with black people. [Edited 3/20/07 4:24am]

There are black soul singers that would sing that little faker under the table. shit, there are white females singers that could dust her. she has gotten very lucky. I agree completely. She should do something interesting with her voice. Just cause she's got that 'kind' of voice, doesn't mean she should do that 'kind' of music. I'd really like to hear her do something different. She just makes me wanna yawn, she should go and watch Sounds of Blackness or the Harlem Gospel Choir and then sit in the corner and think about what a small fish she is The Hottest chip of them all - www.hotchip.co.uk - Get down with Prince

you know what i think is funny, is how when he first came out with TTT he was this skinny, scrawny fella who was the lead singer...but now he's got these muscles but still sort of small. i mean he looks better than he did then...i guess what i'm trying to say is that he has come along way from a leader singer, to songwriter and producer for other artists..well he's always been a musician. okay time for me to shut up. my words aren't coming out right. I see what you're saying - he HAS come a long way & is a fantastic producer (from the stuff that I've heard) I keep meaning to make a thread about what's possibly his most perfect song yet - "Everything" by Mary J. That shit brings TEARS to my eyes!! It's fucking flawless, & to get her to sing flawlessly seems a bit of a feat, I've never heard her go @ it like that That said, this relationship disgusts me He's just so much older than her, it's fuckin' nasty I know, I'm saying this on a P message board of all things, I guess I gotta open my eyes to that muthafucka too. Though has he had this much of an age gap? Probably huh?
