...but I do love that Benetton ad of theirs. It's shocking! I'm feeling shocked. I actually like the form but not the texture or full execution. Is this finished art? Either way, I also like that it's provocative and still clean. Why do you like playing around with my narrow scope of reality? - Stupify

Is that a good thing or a bad thing? I'm not down with the lingo of you youngsters, these days... i mean that in a bad way (and i dontmean bad as in good) lol. There are black soul singers that would sing that little faker under the table. shit, there are white females singers that could dust her. she has gotten very lucky.

But then again I'm not fond of "Soul" singing, anyway - most of the time it's just a collection of licks and nothing to do with emotion. And since you mention it, there are countless black singers who have been deemed "soulful" simply because they're black. Race has nothing to do with "soul" - quite frankly the abuse that girl got when she won best urban act at the Brits a few years ago was disgusting. Since when did "urban" mean "black"?

There is even more of a double standard when discussing Joss and others like Alicia Keys. Now im not gonna get into defending Joss's talent again, because if you like her, cool, if you dont, turn the page. But the bigger issue that seems to bother me is this whole "faker" "wannabe" labeling going round conerning Joss. And Yet someone like Robin Thicke is held up like the Fucking messiah of soul, now not knocking him, but cut me a break with this guy already he is not even worthy of a quarter of the praise he is getting, the press is kinder to him for many reasons, one, he is a male, and two, he looks the part, case closed. But what does strike me when i see the blasting of Joss and others with talent and at least respect for the music that was before them, is how we do pick on those with talent and let others slip by un marked. The other day i saw this interview with Norah Jones talking about music that she grew up on, and i guarantee if you quizzed todays POP stars like a Justin on the artists she mentioned he wouldnt know one of them, theres alot to be said of those who respect what was before them and some just do that. "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

She sounds like a watered down Beyonce and one Beyonce is enough to me.

There are plenty of Joss Stone fans around, don't worry - and to be honest, I think she's got as good a voice as any of her contemporaries in her genre. I just don't like that genre!

Dont forget that she is also female too, that has alot of play in why she gets dismissed, if she was male she would be the second coming! Stone is definitely a talented vocalist. My problem with her is that she tries too hard. I don't believe anything she sings.
As for Saadiq freakin' Stone - my momma told me that if I don't have anything nice to say, shut the hell up.

SynthiaRose said: anon said: That cinder block wall, in the back, doesn't bother you? The sculptural element is beautiful but, it would have been so much better if they popped from a black background (or in the very least, got rid of the borders). There's too much of the wrong kind of clash going on. It's takes away from the best part.
I was SO focused on them, I didn't even notice. I'm like ..what is anon talking about... what block wall?? But yes. That's awful. I do like contrast, but that is indeed the wrong kind. Anyway, something somewhat Niki de Saint Phalle about it. (not necessarily this image but I couldn't find the sculptures that were closer) Why do you like playing around with my narrow scope of reality? - Stupify

WTF have you never heard of Al Green, Aretha Franklin or Otis Redding ? Urban means black in the U.S. it has become the coded word for black.

Urban means "of the city", and to me it always will. The idea that only black artists can create music that has an 'urban' sound is fucking ridiculous. Spelling edit. [Edited 3/19/07 17:41pm]
