What's on them? They look like foreign issues or bootlegs.

Luther was actually a disco-soul group Vandross put together back in the 70's. His first couple albums with this group, which are the ones you just mentioned, weren't big sellers. Vandross bought back the rights to these albums after the record label dropped the group, preventing their later re-release. So, yes these are hard to find releases and I've never heard anything the group has ever recorded. But if you happen to get a hold of them Icicle, you are one lucky person!

I know he recorded plenty of tracks before he made it big, even a duet with Patti Austin... "I'm gonna miss you in the morning" from the Quincy Jones album "Sounds... and stuff like that"

The album also includes a Luther/Gwen Guthrie duet, "Takin` it to the streets"
Patti Austin provided more vocals for this album, a cover of Stevie Wonder`s "Superwoman". Chaka Khan can be heard on "Sounds..." too.

Not bad.... biggrin

I have both of them.
It's intresting cuz Luther was discovered by
David Bowie when he heard him singing in the studio.
He'd join his friend Carlos Alomar who played guitar
with Bowie who was recording "Young Americans" in the states 1974.

While recording the titletrack Bowie heard Luther singing along
and told him to take place in the vocalbooth so he could record that.
Luther Vandross then took place as a backupsinger in
Bowies band for the "Diamond dogs/Philly soul tour".

Bowie was the one who got Luther Vandross a recorddeal with his
band "Luther".the first song of the 1976 debutalbum
"Funky music" is the same song as "Fashination" from
Bowie's "Young Americans" album, but with different lyrics.

That 1976 "Luther" album is really great from beginning to end.
y favourite beeing "The 2nd time around" and "This strange feeling".

I heard that when Luther Vandross had his major breakthru he bought
the rights to these 2 albums so that they never could be re-issued.
That sounds so strange and unbelievable, cuz it's up there with the
best stuff he recorded I think.

I think he may have re-recorded a few of these songs for his solo albums. Some of those titles look familiar.A song called "Emotion Eyes" appears on his 1993 album 'Never Let Me Go' while a song called "Don't Wanna Be A Fool" appears on his 1991 album 'Power Of Love'.I wonder if these are the same songs he recorded in the late 70s?

I've heard a re-recording of "The 2nd time around".
Not as good as the original tho I think.
