Favorite D'Angelo Cover?

While we all wait for James River, let's talk about D'Angelo's surprisingly long list of released cover songs. The man certainly has excellent taste in picking cover songs.

Cruisin'
Your Precious Love (with Erykah Badu)
Can't Hide Love
Girl You Need a Change of Mind
She's Always in My Hair
Heaven Must Be Like This
Feel Like Makin' Love
Everybody Loves the Sunshine

That should be all of them. Which one is your favorite?

Edit: I forgot "Everybody Loves the Sunshine," which was the b-side of "Untitled (How Does It Feel)." I need to... locate (ahem) that one. lurking

Never been to impressed with his Prince cover.

It is us putitng the pressure on them too. They release a debut and we go potty over them, then they deliver a freestyle second album and we let them go. Erykah, Maxwell, D'Angelo...

yeah D'Angelo's second effort
really has some more growing to do (on me)

but Badu... the woman can do no wrong
I saw her a few weeks ago @ the Black Forest Theater
in South Dallas, where she had a Green Party
(celebrating the rebirth of the earth)

and she's rockin the bald fade again biggrin
she had actually dyed it green also

I was starstruck, so needless to say
I didn't get any pics with her
but you can see pics from the show
on my myspace page

eek Really? It took a little while for me to warm up to it because I was expecting Brown Sugar 2, but it still hasn't grown on you?

I don't play it much to be honest
I mean I have a 12 inch of "Devil's Pie"
and "Left, Right" which I wear em both thin

I will pull Voodoo out today
one of my best friends thought
I was crazy at the time it came out
because I didn't "get it" like he did

I went out & supported it
only to be disappointed
I was more into the hip hop
of that time anyway...
neo-soul was beginning to get
a lil over-exposure to me

Voodoo to me was a disappointment cuz his vocals seemed to be muddled into the background...

But then I saw him live and I was converted again. Music is baptism.

cool...
and speaking of Voodoo
I think I read somewhere that
this:

was his main influence for that album?

I honestly don't know. I only know that Questlove said that they wanted to recreate the drums on Africa to be like the ones on Parade, like the first three songs.

He only has 2 albums (and 1 live album). Most of these songs are on various soundtracks.

incognito

"Cruisin'". Why? In 1979, DJs could play any song on an album (vinyl or 8-track) without the approval of a record label or the radio stations' programming director. A DJ in Chicago on WVON, named Tom "The Fly Jock" Joyner played the song and it became the number one requested and radio air play song during the summer of '79 in a city of 3 million people (suburbs not included).

Motown got wind of what was happening in Chicago and decided to release the song as a single, although originally, the powers-that-be at Motown believed "Cruisin'" to be a throw away song. Tom talks about this story every now and then on his nationally syndicated radio show.

Some people like to play the song during lovemaking sessions; however, you can really feel the power of the lyrics in a convertible cruisin' on a hot Sunday afternoon.

I like Smokey's version because it's the original. DeAngelo's is sultry... in a good way.

I love his versions of Everybody Loves The Sunshine and Cruisin and Can´t Hide Love.
I also liked the revamped version of Ghetto Heaven called Gheto Heaven he did on Common´s album.
I have yet to hear his take on She´s Always In My Hair....is it really as good as people say ?
And where is Heaven Must Be Like This on ? And Girl You Need A Change Of Mind ? Which soundtrack ?
I didn´t really like him and Ms.Badu doing Your Precious Love...it´s OK but not stellar.

I´m starving for new Badu and D´Angelo music. saw both of them live , great shows.

I think so. It's harder than the original (for lack of a better term). It's not better, of course, but that should've gone without saying.

And where is Heaven Must Be Like This on ? And Girl You Need A Change Of Mind ? Which soundtrack ?

The former is on Down in the Delta and the latter on Get on the Bus.

I agree. It's good, but not essential.

I wouldn't say that. He's had one on each album; the rest have been on soundtracks/concerts/b-sides. That's not so bad IMO.
