Ebony and Ivory...bLEH!!

As much as I love Stevie Wonder and respect Paul McCartney, this song sux! Yes, it has a great message, but man, this song blows. It's cheesy as hell!

I think it's a prime example of what CAN happen when you let two major talents(maybe even geniuses) go into the studio and have complete free reign with the music(not that Im against doing everything yourself of course. It's just that, in going that route, you run the risk of your ego stepping in, and not being able to tell correctly what sounds good and what doesn't). I dont know, some of you might disagree, but I just find the song completely corny.

I think Prince can have a similar problem as far as having an ego step in, but MJ has definitely been in the same boat as this song. Earth Song is great and is a good example of how a social-conscious song should be written, but I can barely stand Heal The World and The Lost Children almost made me run towards the trash can

Any thoughts??

Horrible song, yes. Having two music legends sitting in the studio together just doing what they please can turn out some great stuff, but too often just ends up a load of mutual cocksucking.

And I'm not a fan of socially conscious songs anyway, I'm afraid. I want to hear something on the radio that makes me want to live another day - I don't want a lecture from Bono (multi-millionaire tax-dodging hypocrite) on how to spend the little money I have! biggrin

Jesus, I really am in a bad mood tonight. If anybody actually cared about what I was saying I'd be the most unpopular person on these boards! Most people rightly seem to ignore me - it's for the best; carry on, fellas! lol

Earth Song, Heal The World, & The Lost Children are THE same damn song as We Are The World. THAT's why I called it the We Are The World-type bullshyt!!!disbelief

As I said in past threads, Michael needs to stop trying to save the world so much with the same damn song and put more focus on saving the dancefloor.

Maybe this question is a thread in itself, but what ever happen to all of the former members of BDP (especially Melodie, the former Mrs. KRS-One)?

What did I tell you in the other thread?! "Earth Song" and "Heal the World" are good songs! Now stop going on and on about that made-up "Lost Children" song. It. Doesn't. Exist.

Socially conscious songs are like any other type of songs -- it depends on the execution and delivery. Songs like The Isley Brothers' "Harvest for the World," Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On," The O'Jays' "Love Train" and Earth, Wind & Fire's "That's the Way of the World" are great musically. Even if the content wasn't about worldly stuff, these songs and others have inspiring, uplifitng (and in this case, progessively funky) arrangements.

The type of songs like Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney's "Ebony and Ivory" would be mawkish no matter the content, because of the sappy arrangement. Using "Ebony and Ivory" as an example is similar to saying all cars are like a Yugo -- it doesn't mean the concept is bad, merely the execution of that one particular concept.
THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. HOLD ON TO YOUR DRAWERS!

Then what the hell is the song doing on THIS album?:

We pray for our fathers, pray for our mothers
Wishing our families well
We sing songs for the wishing, of those who are kissing
But not for the missing

(CHORUS 1)
So this one’s for all the lost children
This one’s for all the lost children
This one’s for all the lost children, wishing them well
And wishing them home

When you sit there addressing, counting your blessings
Biding your time
When you lay me down sleeping and my heart is weeping
Because I’m keeping a place

(CHORUS 2)
For all the lost children
This is for all the lost children
This one’s for all the lost children, wishing them well
And wishing them home

Home with their fathers,
Snug close and warm, loving their mothers
I see the door simply wide open
But no one can find thee

(CHORUS 3)
So pray for all the lost children
Let’s pray for all the lost children
Just think of all the lost children, wishing them well
This is for all the lost children
This one’s for all the lost children
Just think of all the lost children
Wishing them well, and wishing them home

You don't think "What's Going On" is mawkish? And with the usual 'everyone's entitled to their own opinion' disclaimer, "Love Train" is one of the most abominable pieces of songwriting ever to crawl out of a speaker. The lyric is jaw-droppingly poor, the production bland, the vocals nauseating...

Doesn't help that I had to play both of these hunks of shite in a function band week in week out at one point! lol

Just don't get me started on "What's Going On"... biggrin

Yeah, it is getting to be your opinion and your personal taste. The words to "What's Going On" and "Love Train" are not going to make you trip over them while enjoying the music. Songs like "Ebony and Ivory" not only are created to be preachy, but are meant for you to pay attention to them in a beat-you-over-the-head fashion.

As for "Love Train," you're the first person I've ever heard call that song "abominable." Some 30-plus years after the song is made (one of production legends Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff's best songs), the song is still one that gets people dancing -- I was at a wedding nearly two years ago and a live band performed it; everyone not only danced to it, but requested the band continue playing it for another 15 minutes!

Let's face it -- not everyone gets inspired by crap like Lil' Flip's "It's Going Down." biggrin biggrin biggrin

Ok, granted it gets people dancing, and Gamble & Huff are more sucessful songwriters than I'll ever be. It still brings me out in a rash, though! biggrin

thumbs up!
