Music Or Ray Of Light....Which Madonna C.D Should I Get Next?

hmm

by the way, i also bought the confessions cd+dvd combo. it was supposed to be a b-day present for myself but i couldn't wait a whole week to open it.

IT ROCKED!

there were a few things i would have left out but overall i give her an A. i'm glad i wasn't there because i liked how the camera for some shots went into slow-motion.i hope she was wearing special dancers' boots with traction on the heels because when she performed "let it will be" i thought she was going to fall from the way she was dancing...OH WAIT A MINUTE! that was the "drunk lady at the disco" thing i read somewhere i think there was an explanation given in the special edition of COAD about that?

Ray of Light is like a more consistant album, but the overall hotness is on Music. Music is more street!

I go back and forth on this topic.

Both beat "American Life" hands down.

The great moments on "Music" are among the best of her career. "Music," "Impressive Instant," "Nobody's Perfect," and "Paradise." "What it Feels like for a Girl" is a great track but too adult contemporary for me. Overall, though, the album was a disappointment to me. It didn't feel very new or inspired and the lyrics are among her weakest. "Don't Tell Me" is one of my least favorite of her smash hits.

"Ray of Light" on the other hand is an opus. It's like one long song with thirteen sections. The last two sections suck. But everything else is B+/A- at WORST. The lesser known and more experimental, psychedelic songs kick major ass-"Swim," "Candy Perfume Girl," "Skin," "Sky Fits Heaven" are all amazing. "Power of Goodbye" is the shit. Overall the excitement of hearing this new sound was so...over the top and original for a pop star when it first came out in 11th grade.

So I vote "Ray of Light." But "Music" is half killer.
I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

Ray of Light by far. Music is her most overrated album. Half is decent, the other half is bad to tolerable.

so i take it you dislike "Mer Girl"? why? i think it's the
most intimate and haunting songs she's ever done in
her entire career.

it's strange how you always seem to like a lot of the lp's
that i like, but for totally different reasons, lol.

SoulAlive

Get both CDs lol They both are great, but for different reasons.

'Ray Of Light' is an emotionally "heavy" album with lots of personal, introspective lyrics. This album was our first glimpse of the "new" Madonna....the post-Evita Madonna who seems to have alot more on her mind. The music, produced by William Orbit,is dark and haunting at times and overall, the album has a cold,techno-y feel to it.I remember being mesmerized by this album when I first heard it.It's one of Madonna's strongest albums.Best songs include "Drowned World/Substitute For Love","Sky Fits Heaven","To Have And Not To Hold","Frozen","Skin","Little Star" and the pulsing,take-no-prisoners title track.

'Music' is a lighter album, not nearly as "serious" as ROL.This time,Madonna is newly married and wants to celebrate her newfound happiness. The first three songs are extremely fun and carefree. The title track is her catchy tribute to early 80s electrofunk."Impressive Instant" continues the party. But it's not all fun and games: on songs like "What It Feels Like For A Girl" and the excellent closer "Gone",she tackles more serious concerns. The music, produced by Mirwais,is delightfully breezy and light. There's some acoustic guitar throughout ("Don't Tell Me" could almost be considered country/electronica,an odd combination).Musically,'Music' just might her most daring album.

Nah, but I think it's a good album nontheless. It's electrofolk at its best.

Ray of Light is more solid. Music is the transition piece between Ray of Light and American Life. You don't get American Life without Music.
You CANNOT use the name of God, or religion, to justify acts of violence, to hurt, to hate, to discriminate- Madonna

ray of light, easily. music has about 3 really good songs, one or two ok tracks, and the rest is crap. ray of light is far more consistent, everything is either (at least) good or great.

I'd pick Ray of Light; I've recently started playing it again, and while it is definitely from 1998, I don't think it's dated as much as some will lead you to believe. I think that it's one of the most consistent, rewarding listens in Madonna's catalog. "Drowned World/Substitute for Love", "Frozen", "Ray of Light", "Swim", "Nothing Really Matters", and "Power of Goodbye" are all better than anything on Music.

When Music came out, I had such high expectations for it. Ray of Light had been amazing, she had been everywhere in 1998/1999, Madonna was finally back in the public's good graces; I really thought she could do anything at that point. I remember feeling really puzzled by the Music CD, though. All of those vocoders, the half-baked lyrics, the bizarre cowgirl theme - the album really confused the hell out of me. The CD does have its share of winners: "Music", "Don't Tell Me", "Gone", "What It Feels Like For a Girl" are all top-notch. But for the first time ever, I really noticed how lazy Maddy's songwriting could be ("Runaway Lover", "Amazing", "Nobody's Perfect"). And I think that Mirwais is a one trick pony, after a while all of the upbeat stuff sounds similar, and the ballads he produced are too sparse to really latch on to.

I'd say buy Ray of Light, and then pick up Like a Prayer and Erotica for a better representation of Madonna's best work.
I'm the first mammal to wear pants.
