Alyssa Milano started out on TV while still a kid so I wouldn't consider her a "porn star" crossing over to the mainstream.

Now Traci and Heather Hunter's feeble attempts can be considered but they didn't exactly "make it".

I don't know of any successes in this area. I like my retired porn stars to be where they all are right now.....on the net doing strip teases talking to me about their old movies.

Blues singer Candye Kane took an unusual route to a music career.

Twenty years ago, Candye Kane was just a drive away from country stardom when the bottom dropped out of her $150,000 deal with CBS Records.

In order to assuage the label’s concerns, her manager had told her she needed to lose weight, renounce her adult film past and claim she was a born-again Christian. But when she arrived for their meeting with CBS overweight and cussing about traffic, it was clear to him that she hadn’t changed.

"He said, ‘I can’t take you into CBS,’ " Kane recalled. " ‘I’ve misrepresented you to the record label. You haven’t tried at all to change. So forget it.’ "

For the former adult film star, it didn’t make a lot of sense.

"Being Jewish, it just didn’t feel right saying I’m a born-again Christian, and it’s all behind me," she said. "I never understood what it had to do with the music."

For a while, her dream of becoming a recording artist was crushed. Yet, she would bounce back — not as a country act, but as a bawdy blues singer.

Kane will belt out the blues during the latest San Luis Obispo Blues Society performance Saturday.

As a singer, Kane can growl and belt out the blues with the best of them. Meanwhile, her songs feature catchy melodies that have been influenced by a variety of genres. Her song "Big Fat Mamas Are Back in Style" combines elements of swing and jump blues while "What Happened to the Girl" (written by her younger son, who’s now 18) features a more pop/country feel. Her upcoming album features a more Delta blues sound, with gospel-like vocals and acoustic guitars.

By changing genres from country to blues, she didn’t have to lose weight or become a Christian. And instead of renouncing her sexual history, the plus-sized diva embraced it with low-cut dresses and risqué songs like "Masturbation Blues" and "Let’s Commit Adultery."

"All I can do is be myself and hope the cream rises to the top, and that people who are open-minded will find me and not be fearful and scared any time sex is mentioned," she said.

Kane grew up in East Los Angeles, where she learned to shoplift at 9 and became involved with gangs as a teen. By 17, she was a young mother with an uncertain future.

She still had dreams of becoming a singer/songwriter, but she didn’t have the money to make demos. So she got into stripping, then adult films.

"The welfare check wouldn’t have cut it for studio time," she said. "That was just barely paying my rent."

Suddenly, she was a star in the porn industry, with her face — and, more importantly, her substantial breasts — adorning magazine covers.

"I was kind of naive about it," she said. "I really thought that being on the cover of ‘Jugs’ — since it was on the same rack as ‘People’ and ‘Time’ and ‘Newsweek’ — would get me really famous.’ "

It did among some crowds. But it would work against her when she tried to become a serious musician.

One time, she was invited to audition for the head of a major publishing company in Nashville — only to learn later that the executive was less interested in her melodies than in her mammaries.

"I get into his office, and he says, ‘So — are you breast-feeding that baby?’ And ‘Didn’t you do a movie with (bosomy porn star) Christy Canyon?’ He didn’t really want to hear my song. He gave it a perfunctory listen, then said, ‘That’s not really what I need right now.’ "

When her CBS contract fell through, she moved out of Los Angeles, had a second child and became a women’s studies major at a local community college. Meanwhile, her husband at the time, a member of The Paladins, introduced her to the blues.

As a performer, she caught on quickly, developing a style similar to the famous belting big mommas of blues, like Koko Taylor and Big Maybelle.

"Even though it gives me the blues sometimes because I’m not making a bunch of money, it’s definitely a specialized place where the older I get, the more credible I am," she said. "Even the fatter I get, it’s OK — though I am on a diet right now."

Like Big Maybelle and some of her other predecessors, Kane’s blues music is open about sexuality. And her bodacious stage act — she’s been known to play piano with her breasts — only reinforces her sexual persona.

With size 44-GG breasts, Kane said, it’s difficult to avoid being sexual.

"If you have boobs this size, you’re going to come across as a sexual persona," Kane said. "When I was in the seventh grade, I came across as a sexual persona. I didn’t mean to, but I had 42-D boobs when I was in the seventh grade. What was I supposed to do? I tried to hide them. It made my life miserable at the time."

Still, even in the more open-minded blues arena, she’s met resistance. A venue where she was scheduled to play in Arcada amended her poster, covering Kane’s cleavage. She has been excluded from some blues festivals by organizers who fear her show is too sexual. And her own family is even uneasy at times.

"I don’t perform ‘Masturbation Blues’ live anymore because my son, the drummer, says it makes him uncomfortable," she said.

While her interesting past does make her stand out from the pack (in fact, the head of the San Diego Ballet is adapting her memoirs into a musical), it does distract from her music, which is legitimately good. And for all the hoopla over sexuality, her songs aren’t really that raunchy. In fact, most aren’t even about sex.

Performing the blues might not pay a lot, but it has given her an international audience. And with eight albums behind her, Kane has achieved her dream of becoming a recording artist.

"I’ve done things my way, and I’ve paid a price for that," she said. "I still work a day job sometimes during slow touring periods just to survive. On the other hand, in some circles people consider me a star. What can I say — I’m broke, but I have my integrity."
