All this woman ever sang was light, healthy porn 4 teenagers.
Nothing wrong with it, it's just boring and expresses a very narrow range of sentiment.

Now Joni Mitchell in her prime was something else!!!!

She is the G.O.A.T. as far as white soul singers go.

For me, it's definitely Annie Lennox, but there are quite a few decent ones. George Michael is right up there.

Michael Jackson wouldn't know soul if it rang his doorbell as an 11-year-old boy dressed in a school uniform.

I know Michael McDonald's hits. The only one I like is "What A Fool Believes" but I find him rather folky and not soulful!

I think you can compare those two with Marvin Gaye and Ray Charles. The first going for a kind of smooth, fluent 'beauty', the latter going for a more pure, raw expression.

Sounds like you need to listen to more Marvin Gaye. That man could do pure and raw just as easily as smooth and beautiful... sometimes even in the same song!

Imo youre both right and it all depends on who youre singing for. Many artists get pigeon holed into a package. Best white soul singer? I dont know. Its prolly Pavorotti or somebody who dosent sing American soul music. Real gut bucket singers? Gotta think about that

You don't like "Takin' It to the Streets"? "I Keep Forgettin'"? "Minute By Minute"? disbelief

His two Motown albums are also quite good.
