IMO, it makes more sense to base a song released as a single in the year in which it reached a certain point on the music charts (usually, its highest peak). Singles like Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" became a No. 1 song in February 1983 and "Beat It" reached the top in May 1983, so they obviously are not going to be considered two of the best songs of 1982. And that was my main reasoning as well. It falls apart when you get an album, fall in love with an album track, and then it's released as a single a year (or 2) later. Also, single release dates are of very little importance to me now that I've given up radio and video shows. So, I should probably be relying on single release dates through 2001 and then album dates. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

I agree. The concept of released singles as we know more or less ended by the late 1990s, so it makes sense to think of songs today in terms of just part of the album release. But prior to that, singles were strategically marketed and the charts subsequently were more useful in determining the success of a song. It's funny, as the years move on, the songs have more resonance. I guess it's because I was older and heard the songs for the first time.

For whatever reason, I didn't really experience that myself. I found the songs that either predate my 'musical awakening' in my teens or are relatively recent were the ones that seemed to resonate most strongly. There are exceptions, of course (The Fall, needless to say, Pet Shop Boys). I don't read anything profound into that though - it just comes down to my preference for particular bands and eras.
