Beatles fans wont accept that there might be music that's a tad more superior than there beloved group

Prince fans can never be satisfied

MJ fans are just fucking nuts

Tool fans are annoyingly elitist

That about does it. And that's cause I LOVE MJ and Prince, as well as appreciate The Beatles. I never really liked Tool. A bit too brooding for my taste. I find there fans the most annoying cause they literally see Tool as being the best band in the world, NO EXcUSES

O yea, and Mariah's fans can be kinda annoying, particularly when they STILL proclaim that the "dreaded" Madonna will be over any time now DESPITE the fact that Madge has been in the biz for almost 25 years lol Seriously, can't both fan bases give it a rest with the diva bashing?

OK, that came out really bitchy, but the point stands. Of the legions of fans that were so passionate back then, it seemed as if to most, Dave Matthews Band was more of a false rite of passage into maturity than a band they adored. I really have to agree about Dave Matthews. They have little to no reason to be so proud and they are some of the biggest music snobs I have ever met! lol

I tend to agree, not because I dislike Dave Matthews Band*, I dislike the type of fan that Moonbeam described (to a T) !

*OK who am I kidding I really don't care for their music. The music snobs you run into are the ones who rally for DMB's "chops" on their instruments. That's of little use if the songs are meandering.

Ditto all of the above for Phish.

I can see why DMB fans can be annoying, but Im actually tolerant towards their fanaticism. Maybe it's cause Im a 22 year old who likes DMB(though I cant call myself a BIG fan). I dont think I can be more than a moderate fan of DMB.

And achi696, I can see your point about the Jackson fans, and I'm one lol Although alot of them are crazy people who DON'T ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT THE MUSIC(That's right, It's true!), I can say that MJ fans are some of the most tolerant and nicest cats I've met.

Anyway, can I please say fans of Chris Brown, Bow Wow, B2K(when they were around) and Pretty Ricky piss me the fuck off!!!!

It's SO TRUE! It really really gets to me when there are actual MJ/Janet obsessives who have absolutely no intention of buying or listening to their music outside of the mainstream releases. Janet has leaked albums rejects and remixes, MJ has a huge catalogue of group-work, remixes and demos. Some of the most prolific and vocal fans have never heard them and don't even wish to ask about or discuss them. But nooo, they're too busy kissing their posters every night, compiling sales statistics and working out conspiracy theories.

Please, let's not turn this into a mudslinging campaign. If this place has taught me anything, it is that there are great fans of any artist and that diversity of opinion can thrive. But that said, there are certain artists whose fans are a big turn off for me. I'm sure you've come across the same. So, get to the list making!

Here are my contributions for now:

  • Tori Amos: Perhaps I just met a bad bunch of them while in college, but the phenomenon is apparently more rampant than that. Or perhaps I just ran into a very vocal "the blood is pumping so hard in my wrists and one more not overflowing with adulation comment about Tori Amos and I'll send it gushing over the 3rd floor bathroom" contingent, but in my experience, Tori fans have, for the most part, been overzealous to the point of not accepting that people make like some other 90s alterna-chicks. I never knew liking Björk was such a crime until I ran into those Tori freaks.

  • Dave Matthews Band: While I'm on my college rant, does there exist a band with more insipid and ubiquitous fans on a college campus than DMB? I even heard someone say "I know everyone likes them here, but I really am a fan," when it was abundantly clear that she was riding the "this is mature, intelligent and inoffensive enough to proudly display among my collection now that I am so deep and in college" trend. OK, that came out really bitchy, but the point stands. Of the legions of fans that were so passionate back then, it seemed as if to most, Dave Matthews Band was more of a false rite of passage into maturity than a band they adored. The same kind of Coldplay/coffee table tolerable acceptance applied to the 18-21 bracket.

  • The Beatles: I've never come across a fanbase with bigger bullies than The Beatles. While there are many here that actually present a coherent argument and exhibit tact and grace, most of my encounters in real life have involved fans regurgitating the same recycled cliches of assumed greatness and reacting in abject horror at the mere notion that another artist may be *gasp* better. They then typically proceed to say, "But you haven't heard [insert "classic" album or song here], have you?" or "You don't know anything about music". These Beatles evangelist bullies have only made my distaste for Beatles music more intense.

  • Prince: Perhaps it is inevitable with an artist with a catalogue as rich and monumental, but I find Prince fans, on the whole, the most difficult to satisfy. The factions are endless, each claiming to know exactly how to manage Prince's career and exactly what his next move should be, whether it be rehashing his 80s glory, returning to his funk roots, wielding the guitar in full force, noodling in jazz experimentation, or retiring from the business altogether. In a way, it's a charming indicator that Prince inspires such passion that his fans become so caught up in the emotions of every move. But it must be incredibly for Prince himself to inevitably piss off a very vocal contingent of his fans with every new song.

Again, I don't mean this to belittle any artist or anyone here. As I've stated, this place has become a haven for a great deal of friendly discussion and has, in large part, been the antithesis of what I refer to here.

Yeah, all of that can be pretty obnoxious, I agree. Ironically, though, none of it approaches the level of obnoxiousness of making gagging or vomiting noises any time an artist one dislikes is brought up or overheard; or joining threads about them only to contribute nothing but to remind everyone how much you hate said artist, repeatedly, as if anyone could forget.

I'm not sure how much I should even comment on this thread.

But I find it ridiculous that you're asking for folks to avoid mudslinging when you call an entire group of fans obnoxious as your premise.

What you're asking is "I'd like to rip on a whole bunch of people, but please be nice to me."

I'm don't know whether I should be offended or laughing.

Whatever. If you read my entire post you'd see that I said that this place is generally an antithesis to the annoyances I pointed out.

The most obnoxious fans are fans of the Beatles and Elvis Presley, many of these people consist of the mass media, who like to big up the Beatles and consign artists like Little Richard and other black artists who pave the way for peeps like Elvis to a footnote. They are so obnoxious that when Public Enemy did "Fight the Power" and did that line about Elvis, they couldn't believe they were really talking about their beloved Elvis.

However the most desperate fans are the MJ fans, especially the current batch of fans. They are obsessive with titles, sales stats and seeing him as a messiah. Many of them know very little about MJ pre-Thriller and are stuck on Michael from the Bad era.

I have to agree. Try posting on MJ fan forums. I was browsing through the "King of Pop" board and found a thread discussing MJ's lip syncing. The thread started said if MJ lip syncs on his next tour, he may be forced to walk out. You wouldn't believe the responses. "You go to MJ concerts to see him dance. If you want to hear him sing, buy his CDs". That comment is wrong on so many levels. There was also "Forget singing. I would be happy if he just stood in the middle of the stage for 2 hrs". There were some sane fans who hate that he always lip syncs these days and believe Triumph was the best tour he ever went on. Most MJ fans don't know any of his J5 material, and some even admitted they've never listened to Off The Wall. These are the same fans that call "Invincible" his best album and "Speechless" his best song. I hung around the MJ forums during the trial, and the fans were so awesome back then. As a whole we were dynamite. We were always one step ahead of the media as far as what we knew about the case. We had hard facts to prove MJ is innocent, and it turned out we were right. Those were good days to be an MJ fan. Now, they've just gone insane. Michael won the trial and now they've got nothing to do.

MJ "haters" are more annoying than MJ fans. Expecially those who think they are funny when the repeat joked they heard on Jay Leno or Conan O'Brien. It's just plain annoying when an MJ fan says something like "I wish I could meet MJ" and someone will say "too bad you're not a 12 year old boy". It's just not funny anymore. Plus the fact that they are making fun of a very serious issue that has hurt alot of people.

It's not. lol

Not loving them is in the eyes of many, though.

That's just silly. I don't believe for one second that Beatles fans tend to be worse people than the general population.

If Beatles fans tend to push back harder, that's only a reflection of the fact that the Beatles are the most beloved pop music act of all time. You know the depths of feelings people have about this band (who couldn't?), so you should hardly be shocked when you experience a little blow-back when you post a puke emoticon or whatever.

I understand what you mean, i`m a big fan of M.J myself, and i don`t find the jokes funny either...

What i meant when i said M.J fans (and i don`t mean everyone) are the most annoying is that many of them think he`s God or something, that he`s perfect and can do nothing wrong.

I was on a Mariah site (mariahhero.com) the other day.. and... well, I'm a fan. But these kids r just obsessed and think she's the center of the universe.
They were discussing the new album and were like "This is going 2 b the best album in the history of music"... and they meant it!!! So now they hate me 'cause I told them they were annoying sad

I guess I'm not that much of a fan - or lamb... whatever neutral

I just enjoy her music biggrin

For years, she was the center of my universe. (She still is...sort of.) I drove my friends crazy over my undying obsession over Mariah, and I literally thought I might be overly obsessed with her. That was until I saw that MTV show Fanatic and some of the outtakes from people who auditioned to be her biggest fan, and then I realized that those people were nuts. nuts nutty Then I realized that I still had some self-respect left in me.

Even as crazy as Mariah fans may be, don't ever get into a discussion about the Beatles with a Beatlemaniac. I love the Beatles myself, but even they had their weak moments. How can anyone listen to "I Am The Walrus" and see anything profound in lyrics like "sitting on a corn flake.." You point out the silliness of that lyric, and they react as if you uttered a racial, religious or homophobic slur.

Very!! cool

Her album Ys. was on many of the year-end lists for the Best of 2006.

To be fair, I think she's talented... just not for me. I like quirky female singer songwriters, and I've tried to get into Joanna.... but damn, I just couldn't.

Many of her fans are fine, but I've enountered quite a few who think that if you don't "get" Joanna, then - pffft - you should just lock yourself in a room full of Britney Spears CDs and be done with it. smile
