I really have to agree about Dave Matthews. They have little to no reason to be so proud and they are some of the biggest music snobs I have ever met! lol

Please, let's not turn this into a mudslinging campaign. If this place has taught me anything, it is that there are great fans of any artist and that diversity of opinion can thrive. But that said, there are certain artists whose fans are a big turn off for me. I'm sure you've come across the same. So, get to the list making!

Here are my contributions for now:

  • Tori Amos: Perhaps I just met a bad bunch of them while in college, but the phenomenon is apparently more rampant than that. Or perhaps I just ran into a very vocal "the blood is pumping so hard in my wrists and one more not overflowing with adulation comment about Tori Amos and I'll send it gushing over the 3rd floor bathroom" contingent, but in my experience, Tori fans have, for the most part, been overzealous to the point of not accepting that people make like some other 90s alterna-chicks. I never knew liking Björk was such a crime until I ran into those Tori freaks.

  • Dave Matthews Band: While I'm on my college rant, does there exist a band with more insipid and ubiquitous fans on a college campus than DMB? I even heard someone say "I know everyone likes them here, but I really am a fan," when it was abundantly clear that she was riding the "this is mature, intelligent and inoffensive enough to proudly display among my collection now that I am so deep and in college" trend. OK, that came out really bitchy, but the point stands. Of the legions of fans that were so passionate back then, it seemed as if to most, Dave Matthews Band was more of a false rite of passage into maturity than a band they adored. The same kind of Coldplay/coffee table tolerable acceptance applied to the 18-21 bracket.

  • The Beatles: I've never come across a fanbase with bigger bullies than The Beatles. While there are many here that actually present a coherent argument and exhibit tact and grace, most of my encounters in real life have involved fans regurgitating the same recycled cliches of assumed greatness and reacting in abject horror at the mere notion that another artist may be *gasp* better. They then typically proceed to say, "But you haven't heard [insert "classic" album or song here], have you?" or "You don't know anything about music". These Beatles evangelist bullies have only made my distaste for Beatles music more intense.

  • Prince: Perhaps it is inevitable with an artist with a catalogue as rich and monumental, but I find Prince fans, on the whole, the most difficult to satisfy. The factions are endless, each claiming to know exactly how to manage Prince's career and exactly what his next move should be, whether it be rehashing his 80s glory, returning to his funk roots, wielding the guitar in full force, noodling in jazz experimentation, or retiring from the business altogether. In a way, it's a charming indicator that Prince inspires such passion that his fans become so caught up in the emotions of every move. But it must be incredibly for Prince himself to inevitably piss off a very vocal contingent of his fans with every new song.

Again, I don't mean this to belittle any artist or anyone here. As I've stated, this place has become a haven for a great deal of friendly discussion and has, in large part, been the antithesis of what I refer to here.

Tori fans are loving and caring...We sure love our Bee Sides. We just don't like people who don't dig pele...

Jackson fans. Both Michael and Janet. Obsessed with sales, overflowing with apologies for crazed behaviors, incessant in their quest to make martyrs out of their favorite performers. Honestly, I can say that the Jackson fanbases have helped turn me against the artists that they support. Of course, their lackluster music hasn't helped their causes any, but I don't think I'd have the same visceral response to their images and music if the fans weren't just so ridiclious.

I love David Bowie and everything, but I don't feel the need to constantly proclaim that the 'Tonight' album was sabotaged; U2 are my absolute favorite band, but I don't feel the need to go off the rails every time someone makes a negative comment about Bono.

These Jacksonites just really skeeze me out, sorry. I think it's funny that their intentions are to promote the artists they love, but they accomplish the exact opposite goal. They turn people off.

I was a huge Janet fan, queuing for Jan tickets, buying every magazine with her picture on the cover;even though I've been disappointed in everything she's put out since 2001, I don't think I'd be so put off by her image/music if it wasn't for her fans proclaiming her to be the second coming.

Michael is even worse. I was never as big of an MJ fan as I was of his sister; I did like him enough, though. I have every CD he put out from Off the Wall through Invincible; I kinda grew out of MJ's music, and his bizarre antics certainly didn't help my appreciation of his music out any. I think without his overzealous fanbase, though, I'd look at him in the same light I look at Britney Spears - sure she's had a break from reality, but she's amusing and harmless. The Jacksonatics, though, invoke a completely different response from me now. Honestly, that .gif that Sos posts in the Jackson discussions nowadays really expresses my reaction to the multitude of MJ related threads here.

I def. agree about the Prince fans I remember not liking Prince for awhile BECAUSE of the fans. Things have changed now though

And achi696, I can see your point about the Jackson fans, and I'm one lol Although alot of them are crazy people who DON'T ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT THE MUSIC(That's right, It's true!), I can say that MJ fans are some of the most tolerant and nicest cats I've met.

Anyway, can I please say fans of Chris Brown, Bow Wow, B2K(when they were around) and Pretty Ricky piss me the fuck off!!!!

Petheads tend to be smart and educated. You have to be well versed to figure out what Neil is talking bout half the time.

Plus with knowledge one can come up with better lyrics than rhyming "york" with "dork".

I think pretty much EVERY artist has obnoxious fans but I heard this story about Of Montreal fans that pissed me off...

A local singer songwriter from here in Atlanta got the chance to open for Of Montreal (the guy's actually really talented and makes good music too, it's not like he sucks) and the O.M. fans actually TURNED THEIR BACKS AND STOOD THERE while he was playing. Arrogant little fucks! mad

For years, she was the center of my universe. (She still is...sort of.) I drove my friends crazy over my undying obsession over Mariah, and I literally thought I might be overly obsessed with her. That was until I saw that MTV show Fanatic and some of the outtakes from people who auditioned to be her biggest fan, and then I realized that those people were nuts. nuts nutty Then I realized that I still had some self-respect left in me.

Even as crazy as Mariah fans may be, don't ever get into a discussion about the Beatles with a Beatlemaniac. I love the Beatles myself, but even they had their weak moments. How can anyone listen to "I Am The Walrus" and see anything profound in lyrics like "sitting on a corn flake.." You point out the silliness of that lyric, and they react as if you uttered a racial, religious or homophobic slur.

I'm also a huge jackson fan but some fanatical fans have come almost close to making me hate one of them for some time that I had to take a break from boards and then I was thinking for myself again.

I think mariah fans are the worst by far, and madonna fans as well. They make you feel like dirt for liking other artists that aren't tori amos or bjork.

I can't really fault fans for being fanatical about their artist. On the other hand...

I'm a huge Frank Black fan. Huge. But every other time I've seen him live (especially when he was touring with the Catholics), it seemed like frat boys night out. Not my thing.
