its very difficult to recommend the funkiest cd by JB. I will give you a few options of my favorites:
"The Popcorn" "Its a mother" "Aint it funky now" "Payback" "Hell" "Get Up I feel like being like a Sex Machine" and "The J.B.s - Anthology" and George Clinton? do you mean Parliament, Funkadelic or his solo stuff? "Peace and Benz -- The future, made in Germany"

You answered yourself. "JB40" (two CD set) is a good summary of JB's major hits.
Funkadelic (Both eras), Parliament and George Clinton all have best of CDs too.

James Brown get either JB40 or the STAR TIME box set. If you want a studio album of his get THE PAYBACK but overall you're better off with one of the compilations.
As for George Clinton his best solo album is COMPUTER GAMES. If youre gonna go for one Funkadelic album get either ONE NATION UNDER A GROOVE or STANDING ON THE VERGE actually get them both. As for Parliament MOTHERSHIP CONNECTION is the place to start.

when it comes 2 james brown
U definitle should try 2 look up a cd called "love power peace". it's a "lost" live album from paris in 1971 with a young bootsy collins on bass & his brother catfish collins on guitar. this was just a few weeks before the original JB's split up making this the only true live recording with this group. when the band left him james brown cancelled this album.it did'nt see the light of day 'til 1992. lost but not forgotten, this album is outrageus. U also should take a look at parliaments "the clones of dr.funkenstein" from 1976 and "mothership connection" from 1975. it simply don't get any better!!! love power peace/manki

I'm going to get even deeper. Pick up all product by James Brown and George Clinton. There are tons of spinoff acts by both artist. Just start somewhere and get yo funk on!
There is alot of deep music in both catalogs. JB's 70's music is the DNA of funk. Pick up all he Parliament lps you can find them on cd. The lps were even deeper...pop up covers, posters etc. Funkadelic--start with the Westbound lps.
