I have a daughter who just celebrated her 10th birthday. She made a song list for a CD she wanted me to burn for her party and their many dance contests they had that night. Here's the list:

We don't approve of 90% of those songs, but seeing that it was for her slumber party, I went ahead and made the CD.

My 11 and 14 year old boys, on the the other hand, like this kind of stuff: Taking Back Sunday, Sum 41, Panic at the Disco, My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Blink 182, All American Rejects.

My nine year old niece is listening to ....

Dancelot, your kids are listening to some great stuff. I don't have any kids (thank God) but I do have four nephews, ages 14, 13, 8, and 8. My two sisters had two boys each.

All of them listen to that slow boring shit hop that's all over the radio these days such as Nelly, Chingy, 50 Cent, etc. However, the youngest boy surprised me one night. I had previously made my sister and her husband three Isley Brothers CDs, two fast CDs and one slow jam CD. Last Christmas my nephews were all together and they were fighting over their CDs. The youngest one snatched the remote control from his cousin's hand and said...."That junk is boring, I want to hear The Isley Brothers!". My whole family fell out laughing and my sister said "He ain't never lying.". Unfortunately, he's real young so I'm sure he'll grow out of it.

I also did some CD compilations for him in the past, mainly based on songs he knew from movies like Shrek, A Sharks Tale, Scooby Doo etc. ...and I also included several funk originals that we heard performed by a local Soul & Funk cover band at a concert festival which he enjoyed very much... a few other tracks he heard either from mommy, his aunt, on the radio or wherever... here's some tracklisting... pretty patchy, but with a few exceptions I can live with that

yesterday my son grabbed my MP3-player to check out some new music, cause he was bored. I warned him he probably won't enjoy what's on there... but he took it anyway and catched the following:

Rock with you - Michael Jackson
Insurance Man For The Funk - Bernie Worrell
Kiss - Prince (one of his favorite songs at the moment)

he skipped however tracks by En Vogue and Al Green... okay, he's not really into slowies and romantic sounds yet

Recently Ihad 2 put some songs on the MP3-player of my 9year old son.
There were some ridicilous kid songs he requested,Black Eyed Peas,
Bob Sinclar,Emine, but I always try 2 put some Prince or MJ on it.
And thanx 2 Playstation(never thought I would say this) he knows
a lot of rock/pop/funk classics from a game.

As she was growing up I exposed her to vasts amounts of diverse music including everything from Prince to Frank Sinatra...from Smokey Robinson and The Miracles to Simon and Garfunkel but we live in the age where there's no accounting for talent or good music. All that matters is hype and record sales! With that in mind, that kind of playlist probably gets more spins than a Las Vegas roulette wheel.

If you want to be pissed at someone for this decline in music. Start with the folks that make the most money as a result of this trend!
