Lucinda Williams Her new album West is out today(well here in Europe). I've been a fan since Car Wheels On A Gravel Road and i've yet to see a thread dedicated to her here. Are there any Lucinda fans around? What are your fave songs/albums?!

I hated this cunt ever since she beat out Stevie Nicks in the "Best Female Rock Vocal" category at the 2002 Grammys.....

I tried to start a thread couple weeks back....Lucinda is right up there with Prince in my book, as a singer, songwriter, storyteller, genius! I was lucky to get an early copy of WEST and have played it non-stop (matter of fact, I'm playing it now!) Like 2001's ESSENCE, it is a mostly somber affair here. The album deals with tragedy (her mothers death) and heartache (end of a long relationship)...it's beautiful beginning to end. She has such a simplistic was of writing yet it's sophisticated at the same time! The mid-tempo 'Learning How To Live' is my favorite right now..as is 'Fancy Funeral' which is a sad song...but I'm drawn to sadness and I really love this. People should check this out as well as some of her other albums...start with LUCINDA WILLIAMS (1988) and CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD (1998)..her masterpiece. peace Every minute of last night is on my face today....

Fantastic songwriter, incredible performer - I think she has to rate as the greatest musical artist of the last twenty years or so. I haven't really loved any of her post-Wheels albums the way I loved that record, but she still ranks as one of the best in my eyes. [Edited 2/17/07 17:17pm]

WEST is a beautiful piece of work. Many may find it too somber but I love that kind of stuff. It's alot like ESSENCE in that sense. But it deals more with LOSS...loss of a parent, loss of a lover, loss of spirit...however it translates to one's own experience...that's whats so beautiful about brilliant songwriting and Lucinda is no exception! peace [Edited 2/12/07 17:01pm] Every minute of last night is on my face today....

I totally agree... nothing since "Car Wheels" has moved me in the same way, but there are still some amazing songs... "Essence" is one of my faves, and "Steal Your Love." But the last album didn't do much for me. I really like what i'm hearing about "West"... and the first single that I bought from iTunes I really adore..

I love "Just won't burn." That thing got me through a tough patch, one year...
OK, that's hyperbole. But, I still dig it.

I picked up West and so far i love it. It's the sort of record you can live in for weeks. The album it reminds me of the most is Essence. I don't think she's made a weak album.

Her best batch of songs by far - nothing close to a bad song on it, more than a few that are phenomenal: tuneful, powerful and raw. I'd also say it's her best sounding album, too - rough, but right. Up to that point, she'd been getting better and better - 'Lucinda Williams' was the artistic breakthrough, Sweet Old World consolidated her strengths, and Car Wheels is her masterpiece. She peaked at that moment, and she hasn't been able to scale that height again...until now, perhaps.

Damn, I was hoping to see some MFs flip out I know exactly why people flip out about it too She is absolutely amazing in my eyes. She can cut right to the soul with those songs of hers. Her delivery, the music, the lyrics. YIKES! I love it 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

This is the album i've been expecting from her the last 9 years. I think it's superb..... Great feeling to it. Maybe it's just me and i'm too overexcited about it, but DAYUM it sounds good to me.

Yeah, the DELIVERY!! that makes it. On 2 Kool 2-B 4gotten, my favorite part... "I had a lover, I thought he was mine... thought i'd always be his valentine...." Nobody can convey that feeling of vulnerability and hurt like Lucinda. And "Metal Firecracker".... ack! Too many good songs. I need to calm down, i'm going to work myself up

I need to calm down, i'm going to work myself up I'm just as enthusiastic about Lu! Your view on her prolific artistry between 'Lucinda Williams' and 'Car Wheels' is on point. Every album got better and better. I think from 'Essence' to 'West' show an artist who is just comfortable with herself...not out to please anyone, just write great songs...she's found a great home at Lost Highway and that has given her the freedom to do what she pleases. She struggled so much her during her first 20 years with labels wanting her to stick to a certain style to be able to categorize her....she is who she is... WEST is an astounding album...'What If' and 'Where Is My Love' just break my heart...'Fancy Funeral' hits home for me...'Are You Alright' did as well...I am in awe of this women yet again! peace Every minute of last night is on my face today....

I've just had my first listen, and, while I'm not quite ready to totally commit myself to an opinion yet, I think your enthusiasm is completely warranted. Mama You Sweet didn't sit well with me, but otherwise I truly enjoyed every song, and there were more than a few that sounded incredibly great. I even liked What If, the track that Robert Christgau declared the worst of her career in his Rolling Stone review. A few more listens are required, but this sounds like a strong contender for record of the year. [Edited 2/17/07 17:20pm]

I don't know what the issue is with "What If"... it's certainly not the worst of her career, IMHO. It's not the best song on the album, but it didn't strike me as particularly bad at all.

I think Christgau's comments are likely directed towards the lyrics - they do get a little iffy in some places I suppose, but musically it's a perfectly lovely little tune. It is a somber album, as you said, but it's a very, very fine album. [Edited 2/18/07 19:18pm]
