Yep, I saw it this morning. Man, Rick was quite a character even then.

the station here in mpls that usually shows soul train didn't even play the friggin episode! instead they had some home improvement show on.

Rick was a wee bit baked.

Wooooo, of course I saw it. This was my favorite episode of the "old skool" so far. Rick James was the freakin' man. At the end of his performance of "Big Time", the audience was so hyped, I didn't think they were going to stop. Rick was chanting, "PARTY OVER HERE, PARTY OVER THERE", and the crowd was all into it.

The SOS band knocked it out as well.

That music was sounding so good to me, I've watched it several times since Saturday. My goodness I miss old skool funk.

Did anyone else notice a similarity in "character" in the Rick James interview and that of Morris Day? There have been rumors over the years that Prince "borrowed" ideas and concepts from Rick James. After watching Soul Train this weekend, I wondered if Morris' character, which some say was created by Prince, was actually "borrowed" from Rick James. Of course Rick was high, and I'm not suggesting Morris and Rick are carbon copies, but the similarities were noticeable in my eyes. Just my opinion.

Rick James was funny this week. What do you guys think he was on? also my husband seemed to think Don Cornelius was on Qualudes. Anyone else think this is true? He does seem rather mellow all the time. He also seemed nervous about Rick being there and also announce the members of his band. Don wanted to do it!

Rick turned the motherfucker out! I have never seen the "Soul Train" audience so hyped up. Don Cornelius was actually losing control of his show to Rick. ....."Party over here! Party right there!".....They continued that for a while after the music stopped and it took Don a while to wade through the audience to the stage. Then Rick said "Whatchu want us to do with the funk" and audience said "Fire it up!!!!!" He aked them again and Don said "Don't say it, don't say it, don't say it again!".

The SOS Band was great too. I remember when that episode first aired and the SOS Band introduced themselves with their "titles". They and Lakeside had that same "ship" theme that year except they were sailors and Lakeside was pirates.

As usual, the records played for the dancers were great too. However, that's the only time I've ever seen a slow song played for the dancers. I'm glad they never made a habit of that.

Not many people in the "Music: Non-Prince" section will jump on you for that observation. However, over in the "Prince: Music and More" section, some of those kool-aid drinkers would burn you at the stake for saying that.

I've been taping every week religiously.



They need to show the episode with Cameo doing "Freaky Dancing" and they also need to episode with Skyy doing "Call Me" with the telephones and The Barkays episode from the 1980s also.

I would have been pissed!

Yeah, it was a good slow song but it was out of place. It took the place of another ass shaker being played and that's a no-no because my favorite part of the show is the dancers.

I was surprised to see that they played "Shake Your Pants" by Cameo because, judging by the other songs on the show, it was about time for "Keep It Hot".

I feel sorry for you guys who have to wake up in the early morning hours to see it.In my area,it comes on at 11:00 AM,just like back in the day

Cameo had two albums out in 1980, "Cameosis" and "Feel Me". I remember when I started the eighth grade in the fall of 1980, "Keep It Hot" was all over the radio. By the end of the school year in either April or May of 1981, the single "Freaky Dancing" dropped right before the album "Knights of the Sound Table" came out. The single, "Give It To Me Baby" by Rick James had just come out also but the album wasn't out yet.

I remember hearing "Shake Your Pants" the year before in the seventh grade in the middle of jams like "Backstrokin" by Fatback, "Fire It Up" by Rick James, "Push Push" by Brick, "Bounce Rock Skate Roll" by Vaughan Mason and Crew, "Funkytown" by Lipps Inc., etc.

Groups didn't mess around when it came to releasing new albums back then. If a song was popular at the beginning of the school year, it was on it's way to being out of style by Christmas, the artists were unheard of for a few months and people were awaiting a new album the following fall. Some groups did two albums a year every blue moon.
