Cameo had two albums out in 1980, "Cameosis" and "Feel Me". I remember when I started the eighth grade in the fall of 1980, "Keep It Hot" was all over the radio. By the end of the school year in either April or May of 1981, the single "Freaky Dancing" dropped right before the album "Knights of the Sound Table" came out. The single, "Give It To Me Baby" by Rick James had just come out also but the album wasn't out yet.

I remember hearing "Shake Your Pants" the year before in the seventh grade in the middle of jams like "Backstrokin" by Fatback, "Fire It Up" by Rick James, "Push Push" by Brick, "Bounce Rock Skate Roll" by Vaughan Mason and Crew, "Funkytown" by Lipps Inc., etc.

Groups didn't mess around when it came to releasing new albums back then. If a song was popular at the beginning of the school year, it was on it's way to being out of style by Christmas, the artists were unheard of for a few months and people were awaiting a new album the following fall. Some groups did two albums a year every blue moon. lol

Yeah, remember the days when artists and bands used to come out with new albums every six months or so? That's how it seemed back then. You never had to wait too long for new music from your favorite artists. In the disco era,Donna Summer had a new single every few months...lol...it was crazy! I remember hearing "Last Dance" in the June of 1978.A few months later,"MacArthur Park" was on the all the radio stations. Then in early 1979,"Heaven Knows" was released as a single.About two months later,"Hot Stuff" was placed in heavy rotation.By summer,"Bad Girls" was dominating the airwaves, followed by "Dim All The Lights".By fall, two more singles came out: "Enough Is Enough" with Barbra Streisand, and "On The Radio".I think those two songs were released simultaneously, cause I heard them both on the radio at around the exact same time.Nowadays, artists take five years to do an album.Go figure.

Donna Summer used to piss me off....but in a good way. In those days, being a child, I had to beg my grandmother for money for a new album and Donna would be putting out those double albums which really costed a lot. No sooner than the new wore off of "Live and More", here comes "Bad Girls". When I asked my grandmother if she would buy me the new Donna Summer album, she said....."I just bought your ass her album! Take your little beggin' ass outside!". lol

and she released FOUR double albums in a row!

Once Upon A Time (1977)
Live And More (1978)
Bad Girls (1979)
On The Radio (1979)

These days, that would be unheard of.

This is sort of unrelated but I just have to express my love for this thread and the posters of this thread. Years ago, I was accused of not being "a kid of the 80's" because I didn't know the group Kajagoogoo ( it actually turned out that I knew their songs, I just didn't know the name of the group).

I brought that up because when I was told this, I was a little insulted because as a black American, I was expected to know who Kajagoogoo was but the non-black person who said that to me wouldn't know who Lakeside, SOS Band, Michael Henderson, or the Barkays were, to save his life.

I ended up having another similar situation with my co-workers not long ago. We were discussing music of the 80's and we all knew the song "867-5309" but none of them knew "777-9311". If I would have accused them of not being the TRUE 80's music lovers that they claimed to be, simply based upon their lack of knowlege of the music I so loved as a kid, they would have looked at me crazy.

Anyway, it's refreshing that I can come here and mention Midnight Star, Starpoint, Atlantic Star, Mtume, Zapp, Shirley Murdock, Lakeside, Dynasty, The Dazz Band, Confunktion, SOS Band, ect., and people know who I am talking about. So refreshing.

Now back to Soul Train....carry on.
I am convinced Beyonce's career would not be where it is, if she had dark skin.

Loved this RJ episode of Soul Train this past week, it featured his most slept on album IMO "Garden Of Love". The SOS Band was tight too as well as the songs played for the dancers. RJ had that crowd hype didn't he, it just goes to show that back then PUNK FUNK RULED!!!

I know exactly what you mean. If the person that said that to you is a Prince fan, you should ask them what their first memory of Prince was. I can almost guarantee you that they would say "Little Red Corvette". Even on this very site in the Prince section, there have been threads over there on the same subject and the majority of the answers are 1983. What is so humorous to me is that some of those same orgers have argued me down that they know their funk, yet they had no knowledge of Prince before 1983. That lets me know that they didn't listen to R&B radio and where the hell did you find funk back then.....duh....on R&B radio. lol

You're over in the right section because lots of us know our funk over here. Some of the the orgers over on this side will even amaze you with their knowledge.

***Please know one jump on me for this ****

Did anyone else notice a similarity in "character" in the Rick James interview and that of Morris Day? There have been rumors over the years that Prince "borrowed" ideas and concepts from Rick James. After watching Soul Train this weekend, I wondered if Morris' character, which some say was created by Prince, was actually "borrowed" from Rick James. Of course Rick was high, and I'm not suggesting Morris and Rick are carbon copies, but the similarities were noticeable in my eyes. Just my opinion.

Not many people in the "Music: Non-Prince" section will jump on you for that observation. However, over in the "Prince: Music and More" section, some of those kool-aid drinkers would burn you at the stake for saying that. lol

-----
Many times Morris has said they his charcter came from Gangster movies and P's dad and little bit of his personality. I am sorry you guys want to believe that Rick was the only person in black music to do the Gigolo character.

Check out Kid Creole or Sporting Life (Sammy Davis Jr. )
